Hi all, prior to lockdown I was supposed to be trying a section D with a view to loaning him. This has now been put on hold but marked a big change for me as my last two loan horses were both foreign breeds (Friesians). I love our natives and am excited to potentially have a pony that is more of an allrounder but am still fascinated by the sheer variety of horse breeds across the world. Any pics or stories of your foreign breeds or those you ride to brighten up my day?

I had a PB akhal-teke on lwvtb a few years ago (unfortunately returned as unsuitable, broke my heart!)

I've always wanted an American bashkir curly coated horse, they seem like nice all round types

Current share horse is a Portuguese import, 75% lusitano, 25% quarter horse. He can be very sharp (at times)

I have a Lusitano and a New Forest at the minute. The NF is a bundle of fun but I couldn't be without my luso :) I have had Arabs in the past too.

I am currently resisting the urge to buy a little Caspian as companion/driving pony. They are an awesome ancient little pony :D

I love russian breeds. vyatka, orlov trotters and don are two of my favourites.
Can you tell us more please? I know a bit about Orlov trotters but not the other two. OH was learning Russian and I got interested in the horses in Russian literature and in World War2. We went to an equestrian museum in Moscow. And went to the stadium the day before the first race meeting.

Russian dons were cavalry horses. They're always chestnut with a metallic sheen - modern ones are built a bit more like warmbloods but they have more bone. If you look at "golden Stallions International" there's more photos of them. They're very athletic!

Vyatka are draught ponies effectively, usually dun (I love the grullas....!) both dons and vyatka are named after rivers in the regions they were developed... both are fairly endangered now sadly as well. I'd love one though. Maybe one day. (If I win the lottery....)

I found out about vyatka horses from this page on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/Native-Russian-Breeds-Horses-1139137779597339/ there's loads of information on there - what I didn't realise until I found it is just how many breeds are native to Russia.

I love M, he is my favourite forum horse but I suspect if I owned him I'd never get any jobs done because I'd be too busy cuddling him all the time ??
Ahhh - thank you. He's a very good distraction. And currently a bit miffed that the footpath through his field is closed and there are no dog walkers with pockets to check out. So he's focussing on winding our YO round his hoof - she's said he can graze her back garden down!!!

I've got two Latvian carriage horses. Not exotic at all over here, but I presume they're not seen too often around the UK.

This is my big gelding, he's a solid allrounder and we do a little bit of everything. A good head on his shoulders, but still a lot of 'tude and spunk.

And this is my youngster, who will be 2 this June. Pictured as nearly 1yo. His sire is actually a Westphalian from Germany, but they are allowed to be used in improving the Latvian bloodlines. Can't wait to see what he grows into!

I also ride a Russian Don at my trainers' yard. Lovely, little horse with a great mind and the most comfortable gaits I've ever sat!

I’ve ridden PREs when I lived in Spain, Icelandic and fjord horses when I lived in Denmark, Boerperds and a few American saddlers when I lived in South Africa, and an Australian stock horse x anglo arab when I lived in New Zealand. I don’t know if appaloosas are really considered rare anymore but I have had one of those. I’ve had two Arabs and have an Arab x QH mare who is still in Denmark as she’s a very tricky, sensitive horse so I haven’t brought her over yet.

I’d love an Akhal Teke, a Shagya arab and a Lusitano.
