so many to choose from, has anyone used any that work pls?? are the herbal ones any good(heard moody mare works??)

i use thrive fromnaf on my tense, easily stressed tb gelding... he stopped box walking within a weekand doesnt seem to get as stressed anymore.

I'm afarid it is often trial and error with calmers as different ones seem to work for different horses. That said, I've just started one of mine on Cool, Calm and Collected and initial results look good. However, it is pricey....

very good Iain.

If you were suffering a vitamin or mineral deficiency (and this can lead to excitable behaviour) I imagine you would be thrilled if I suggested it could be 'trained' out of you.

Magnesium is proven, therefore i am happy to recommend it. If this isn't the problem then trying it won't do any harm.

I used to use Equine America So Kalm Paste, and that seemed to work. He has either grown out or it or I've got used to it though, as we don't need it really any more.

so kalm works a treat - but the doseage info isn't that good - my hyperhyper pony mare needed nearly a whole syringe for competition stuff

on other days I just use the liquid calmer 'Tranquil' (think the Zerobute people make that)

NAF Magic is good for my boy - just helped him through 3 months box rest and he was even chilled out for his first turnout too!

Think its trial and error on some product though. Good Luck and let us know what you find useful

I think you will find most horses are overfed and underworked.

Junosmum posted about how Ex Stress really helped her Section D mare. Ex Stress is magnesium based. If you are not competiting and want to go the herbal route, then Wendals Herbs Special Arab calmer is good - but it does contain Valerian so is not permitted under competition rules.

I've used Valerian and Hormonise with good effect, but I don't think you can use Valerian if you're competing. Frisky Mare from Global Herbs and Tranquility from Equimins are also good. (not that I've tried every product on the market or anything!!!!) As for training, all for it, but it's not always easy getting through to a hormonal, temperamental mare in season - I've had 12 years of trying! She's great when not in season, though.

Feel Good 30 Science Formula calmer worked well on my ID who has a tendancy to react first & listen later as well as getting generally overexcited. NAF Magic was pretty useless for him although I've known it work well for a friend.

Thanks, where did u get this from pls??who makes it??

Believe me,ive tried the training route, train most days but 1 day she can just be as mad as a hatter,so tense, even at home, hence wanting to try a calmer now!

Its made by the Thoroughbred Manufacturing Company web addy - http://www.trm-ireland.com/products.htm .Its in Ireland.I got local saddled to order it for me it cost 29 pounds for 500gm tub which I used initially to see if it worked,60 for 1500gm tub.The 500gm tub lasted bout 4 weeks on maintenance dose but it was worth it as daughters horse used to rear and do plungy wungies when stressy. We have only had one mild episode since she's been on it (touch wood). We are now on 1500gm tub.Hope it works for you.

cool calm and collected has worked on 2 of the 'mental' horses at my yard. The owners swear by it although I know it is quite pricey.

What worked for my horse, however, was my boss coming into the arena and shouting at me because I was getting tense and winding her up... LOL
