Any good yards in Renfrewshire?

I would recommend Wardhouse Equestrian Centre, they have a great arena and genuine all year round turnout. My experience has been a lot of yards promise winter turn out but in practice it doesn't work like that. Lawmarnock also has great turnout and lots of RC events. What sort of place are you looking for?? Small/big on site instructor??

I'm also looking for a yard in Renfrewshire so hopefully this post generates places I can look into. Took a brief look at your comment/post history as we're both looking for the same thing, and it seems like you run Gryffeside? Is there a reason you apparently don't want to keep your horse there?

I keep my horse at Wardhouse a yard in Kilbarchan and it certainly ticks all the boxes for me. Big stables, good quality all year turnout, big floodlit school, jumps and very professional staff. The hacking is fab and there is a gallop field and cross country jumps. The owner of the yard is a really good instructor and me and my horse has come on leaps and bounds since we moved here. It is great to have a quality instructor on site as any mounted issues can be swiftly ironed out without.

Wardhouse a range of livery package to suit you and you horse from DIY to Full. There is also the choice to get that extra bit of help to add on to your DIY package if needed.

I have also heard good things about Lawmarnock which is just up the road from where I am.

I hope you find a yard that suits you :)

I keep mine at home but I go to Lawmarnock for riding club activities. It seems like a lovely yard and the people are very friendly :D

I kept my horses at Lawmarnock for many many years. Lovely yard, yard owner is very knowledgeable and other liverys were lovely. Two good arenas, all year turnout and lovely airy stables. I would highly recommend it. If I hadnt defected to the other side of the country I would still be there myself (although I do pop in to say hello every time Im in the area ;))

Call me a cynic but seems to me that Impala is trying to drum up business for her livery yard! I'm sure shortly there will be posts suggesting Gryffeside ......

Just to add a different one to look at - Boydstone, out along the 737 towards Beith seems a nice friendly yard, and YO is also a riding instructor. I looked at all of them when looking for livery, but as I like my horse to live out, none had quite what I wanted, so I settled for a private yard with fewer facilities (and, as a result, less of the yard politics that you can get with a bigger place).

Your best bet is to visit all the yards, and also to seek independent feedback from people who keep their horses there.

OMG NG1! I didn't realise. That is soooo funny. Btw I have heard that Ingliston is now offering livery again. No doubt on the expensive side, but oh my what facilities. There is also a private yard in Elderslie, Bardrain Farm. They do DIY only has all year turnout and an indoor school.

Ooh, forgot Meadowpark, over by Houston. My wee share cob used to live right next to Meadowpark for a while, nice folk at the yard and good hacking.

Come on folks, there must be others, that don't begin with a G :D Let's make a nice long - representative - list ;)

I wondered how long it would take for someone else to think the same as me- these posts pop up every so often! Also do a search for posts mentioning the yard begining with G and they are usually from newly registered posters - multiple accounts springs to mind??

Duh *slapsforhead* I never read any previous posts. Now that I have done I see what you are saying. A bit pathetic maybe, but hey, who am I to judge. I have never been to Gryffeside as Kilmacolm is to far out for me though I have to say I am slightly intrigued as to what it is like now.

Hello peeps.
Im looking for a yard in this area to keep a 15.2 cob mare, which i am just about to take on loan.
I am new(ish) to this, been 20 or more years since had horse, but kids grown up now and its just me, so here i go!!
I need somewhere that could maybe do turn out for me, so suppose would be assisted DIY.
Want good friendly place, not too expensive, and people who know what they are doing, since it will take me a while to (re) find my feet.
Fingers crossed :)

Welcome back to the world of horses Iohan :)

Its can be a nightmare finding a good yard. I know Lawmarnock and Wardhouse offer turnout in the morning. They also offer genuine all year turnout on big fields and are really friendly yards.

I have found it helpful when looking for yards in the past to drive past them a few times at different times of day before actually visiting. Some have then been crossed off swiftly. For example one that ”offers” all year turnout but upon driving past it the horses seemed to be standing in pens about the size of two stables. Not my idea of turnout so never called to visit that yard. Or another one offering a good sized outdoor school when in reality it was tiny... The list is long.

Anyway, Wardhouse has qualified and very approachable staff and that would probably be helpful while you find your feet again :D

Thank you Kentaur for your reply.
I must say, im very disappointed that no-one else has had any info.
You have a point, about going at dif times to see the yards.
I thought there was lots of yards in this area?

Hi Iohan, there are lots of yards in this area but not all of them offer assisted livery. For what you are looking for there are four yards in the area that I know of who offer assisted livery of sorts –

Meadow Park, Houston
Wardhouse, Kilbarchan
Gryffeside, Kilmalcolm
Lawmarnock, Kilbarchan

I would definitely visit these yard, all of which are very nice, and not take some of the unnecessary comments on here at face value. Depending on your own personal requirements, you could say there is good and bad on all of them, you might not like something that someone else does, and no I don’t own any of them!

I was looking for assisted livery and made a spreadsheet of what I was looking for, i.e. stable, bedding, haylage, turnout, what state the fields/yard was in (fencing etc), how many horses they had, what kind of herd, i.e. mixed/separate mare/gelding, feed room, tack room, day room, trailer parking, indoor/outdoor school, tuition on site, whether they live on site, security etc., and of course what charges. I visited the above personally, all of them are very nice yards, but doing the research helped me make an informed choice for my own personal requirements. From experience, I know 3 of the above want your horse in at night in winter and they may not turnout to fields if the weather is too bad, however one of them has pens so your horse does get out in all weather and can at least get out of their stable to socialise and get some fresh air.

For what its worth, I was at Meadow Park, a lovely yard but just got a bit too busy for me. I am now at Gryffeside and I am happy with my choice. I would scout around, visit and make notes and hopefully this will help you decide and if there are any further comments on here, hopefully they will be a bit more constructive for you.

Hope this helps.

Iohan,

It might be worth having a look at Midgavin and Auchengrange as well. I don't know if they offer turnout in the moring tbh but they seem like nice yards. As littlejack says there are plenty of yards, it's finding one that suits YOU that can be tricky. Give me a shout if you decide to come and see Wardhouse. I would be more than happy to give you my opinion about being a livery there.

Ingliston have advertised this week that they have limited DIY spaces newly avaialble. Lawmarnock and Wardhouse are both near me, and both seem excellent.

Renfrewshire RC are having clear round jumping at Lawmarnock on sunday 12 -3 (weather permitting). You could pop along and get a wee nosey at the yard :D

Thank you all for your reply's. I have been having internet issues, therefor not been on for a few days.

Littlejack, may i ask how long you have been at your yard, what do they offer etc? I will make a list as you have said, otherwise i will end up going round in circles.

I have heard of the other yards. Not totaly sure where they all are and what they offer..........what are the rates, do they sell hay, feed, shavings etc Wardhouse comes very highly recommended i must say, with fully qualified, friendly staff. For an old newbie, that sounds good.

I look forward to hearing from you all again, and maybe visiting your yards :-)
