Any goodness in the grass?

I have an unusual problem for this time of the year and wondered if anyone could answer this for me.
My horse has had to move to a field with quite a lot of grass and I was wondering whether I should be concerned that it may be too rich and fattening. It is a seeded field and hasn't been used since the hay was made last summer. He will be in it until April, by which time his usual field should be ready again.

I think the grass will provide lots of roughage and help maintain weight, but I dont think there will be that much goodness in it. You may find the droppings get sloppey, if that happens and everything is just quickly passing through them, I would be tempted to section it off with temp electric fencing. Good grazing this time of year, mud free and grass to eat has got to be a good thing. I would just see how it goes and monitor the horses condition.

Thanks. We are probably going to fence some of it off on Thursday but I'm just panicking that he'll blow up in the meantime. He's a cob and certainly doesn't need any more weight on before Spring. I'm back to bringing him in at night now the weather has turned colder again and hoping that should help. Also cut the hay right down at night as he didn't want much at all last night!

The grass in our pony's paddock is lush. I am limiting him on it, just in case, as he's overweight already, but even if he wasnt overweight would be looking at using a grazing muzzle or sectioning parts off.
Yes, some of the grass ATM is almost too good, so just keep an eye out.
