any idea how long nerve damage takes to clear up?

Horse may have had some nerve damage whilst operation had been done on him (its one of a couple of explinations for a bad reaction to saddle he has suddenly developed)

Op was about ten weeks ago. Any help would be good!
 
Not sure about a horse, but I know from personal experience nerve damage takes up to 18 months to become as repaired as it's ever going to. I had the side of my face reconstructed and the nerves on the left side were completely numb following the accident. I would agree that after 18 months the nerve sensations came back as much as they are now (7 years on).

Would your vet be able to advise you more precisely re your horse though?
 
I have tried the vet, described the problem, asked if anything may have happened whilst he was there, and just got told no.

What was the operation your horse had? Maybe genuinely nothing did or could have happened to cause the new saddling issue. Sorry... amended to add.... then again, how exactly could the vet know for sure?

What's the horse doing when you saddle up? It is an adversion to the saddle going on, or to when the girth's done up or only once he's being ridden? Maybe there's a clue in there.

I assume you've checked the horse thoroughly all over? Something like a small developing sarcoid or an irritating fly bite - along where the girth lies (and it'd not be easy to see) could cause irrititation. It sounds as if the horse is genuinely uncomfortable about something.... have you had the vet out to check him since the problem has arisen? And has his saddle and tack double checked. Perhaps he's altered shape slightly after his op if he's been out of work for a while.

Hope you can find the cause.

He had back off splint bone removed/broken bits taken out. Back etc has been checked, nothing wrong. I have spoken to the saddler (good one) I use, and she agrees with me, its not the saddle, else he would do it when you are on him.

He is fine if you put the saddle on, however if you try and do his girth up normally, he throws himself on the floor. He has even done it when the girth is on the lowest setting, which (again saddler agrees) its not a problem with the saddle.

I have checked him all over, cant find anything, but might be worth another go. I havent had vet out again (firstly I am horrendously skint at the minute, and secondly would rather not have them out again!)
 
How frustrating for you. Sounds like you've checked out the obvious things.

It also sounds like he's anticipating pain from the reaction he's giving every time... I'd check his tummy area again. Just incase. Failing that, aside from suggesting another vet takes a look... dunno what to suggest.

Odd that he reacts so violently to being girthed up but then doesn't mind being ridden after. Definitely seems to be an anticipated reaction to the girth being applied doesn't it?

Maybe someone else on here will have experience of this happening and be able to suggest something else.
