Well this evening we went up to ride my pony, and found this (Sorry for anyone thats squeamish, it's also very puffy!):

All I can say is that he is one lucky pony!

After vet came out and told us any lower and he wouldn't be around. Clipped the hair off around it, flushed it out and then when the vet had gone we walked around the field looking for anything that could have caused it, found nothing!

Does anyone have any idea what might have caused it? We thought maybe a kick but its about an inch and a half long and about an inch deep, very clean edges though.
Vet said to just keep flushing it and putting cream and vaseline around it to stop flies getting in. He also has a fly rug with a neck too now :)

Fencing was triple checked, some of its stock fencing but nothing sticking out, wooden posts with electric tape on top with plastic holders. Rest of its all plastic posts and new tape which had a current through it. He was out with three others (now just one without shoes), only one had back set and she tends to lean more towards biting than kicking.

Edit: Yes its his neck he had his head down to eat whilst waiting for vet.

Hmmm. Dunno then. I was going to to say it looks like he's reached over something and caught himself on it either putting his neck over it or pulling it back.

Might be one of them things you'll never find sadly, same with one of ours earlier this year. Ripped his hind leg open to the bone from the top of his hind cannon to his fetlock, was just cut open straight cut like a tin can. Vet was dumbfounded over what could have had such an impact to cause it! As was in a post and rail field with nothing lurking he could have done it on, nor does he hooey round like a complete idiot, and he was on his own! :/ Never found out what he did it on :(

Thats weird too! Maybe they just hide the evidence knowing they will get a telling off! :D

I wondered if someone might have walked onto our land maybe, as nobody lives there... it's right beside a bridal path and a public footpath so might be the cause! Very unusual though its between a cut and a puncture wound almost?
