my mare has been a bit foot sore with stones when riding out, she is fine when you are on a smooth surface, have noticed on one of her back hooves that the growth lines are spread out on the outside but narrow on the inside, also looks like inside hoof has splayed out while outside looks fine, could anybody here have an idea why??
Only had farrier 2 weeks ago but have made an appointment with him for friday, she does not have back shoes so past couple of times farrier has not taken anything off back, and it was an apprentice that only rounded them off this time

not best pics but hopefully will give you an idea

Maybe her conformation means she puts more weight on the inside of her hoof (is she toe out at the back?) thus constricting the growth on the inside so it grows less than on the outside. Does she need more hoof trimmed on the outside when the farrier comes?

I've owned her for a year now and she has never been foot sore on hinds, her feet were a real mess when I got her and farrier did sort them out, as she was very very boxy. I am just worried that it might be something to do with her pedal bone, as she does seem to rest that foot when in yard and also pulls when you lift that one up.

Did she have the rings that go around when you had her, I thought this was a sign of laminitis, which would explain your pedal bone theory. You should get it checked out, although your farrier should know everything about feet, maybe you need to ask you vet. She may need xrays. It might be very mild which is why its showing on uneven ground but worth getting it checked IMO

I'm glad you're getting it looked at. It is hard to tell from the photos but it looks like her foot isn't balanced properly. You're right that it looks flared on the inside - it also looks longer as well on the inside which will make it uncomfortable for her. Even if there is an underlying cause, just having it trimmed better could well make all the difference.

I'd definately be wanting check for laminitis though so I'm glad you're getting it looked at.

the hoof looks very out of balance to me! whether that has caused anything else to occur is hopefully something your farrier will be able to tell you on friday but if not I would maybe get a vet to check it out especially as she is sore on it.

I'd say she grows quicker on one side more than the other...or she wears down (unbalanced) the ridges (ring effect) has she had lammi?? looks like lammi rings when they start to grow out...
