Any Idea What is Causing my Dog's Skin Irritation?

Brochan has (for the past week) been biting near his back end. He has even bled himself. He will also go from being settled one moment to spinning around to bite at himself the next. My other dog has been fine. Could he have been stung or brushed against something that has caused his skin to be irritated? He will quite often 'sit down' over weeds, clumps of grass and small bushes as he is pooping. He also likes to get really close to bushes and branches as he is peeing. Which means that he will often make physical contact with the leaves or whatever. Whereas Neamhnaid doesn't do those things. If it goes on for much longer then he'll be going to the vet.

Somebody else has mentioned (on another forum) that their dog is currently having a similar problem.

Are there any seasonal shrubs, plants or whatever that are guilty of causing skin irritation? I have also noticed a lot more nettles (that is maybe due to the milder weather).

Any ideas?

Thanks.

They might be. I've had him for just over three years and he's never done this before and his glands have not been emptied manually in that time. I do know it's common for dogs to drag their behinds on the floor if their glands need emptying, but Brochan has not done that. What other signs are there?

My dog one day started to bite around the base of his tail. He used to bite himself until he drew blood. He had developed flea allergy dermatitis, changed to advocate and not had a problem since. He would seem quite settled then suddenly spin around and chew. He had never suffered from it before and it just "happened" when he was about 5 years old (now 12). Could be a whole host of things, but normally allergies of some sort are quite high up on the list.

Well I can't remember exactly as this was our old dog, so over 6 years ago, but it was more signs of irritation than the classic dragging the bottom on the ground!
She was quite old at the time and the vet explained that as they get older sometimes their anal glands don't empty as efficiently when they poo. So if yours is only 3, then probably more unlikely.
Sorry no experience of allergies.
