Yesterday my horse had a swelling down the front of the left fore cannon. Not hot or lame, but cold hosed etc. This morning is was a bit bigger, but now is just staying the same size. It still doesn't have any heat in, and the horse is perfectly sound and seems unaware of the swelling. My main worry is that is is all the way down the common lateral extensor tendon (i think as the swelling stops at the pastern). It starts by the side of the knee, then runs down the front of the leg. It isn't fluid filled, it is pretty solid, almost feels like a thickening of the tendon. Here are some pics:

So any ideas?????????????

Wilby's legs look a little bit like the first picture, but not swollen as the other pictures, and the 'swelling' is higher up on Wilbs. My YO thought it looked like he had swollen shins (as if he'd bashed them?) but have concluded it's just conformational. Sorry that's not much help; it's the only thing I can think of!

Rather than his extensor tendon, could it be the bone instead. My darling welshie (always a ladies man) was sniffing a mare over the gate in the next field, and simultaneously squeeled and struck out with front foot (and his leg connected with the gate).

He initially had quite a large swelling on the font of his 'shin' though was lame unlike your boy. At one stage (about 2 days after) I could feel a hard circular edge to the swelling but a soft middle, then all hardened, then gradually (and with some DMSO being rubbed in with a toothbrush every day) completely disappeared.

Alternatively - my present mare had a v swollen extensor tendon on the front of her hind leg ( as vet put a vetwrap on too tight), and had a large swelling on the front of her leg too. She was never lame and with lots and lots of cold hosing it eventually returned completely to normal (except for some white hair).

Hope this helps (sorry for the ramble)

Fiona
