Took the fat beast, Blacky :p, out for a hack today and she was a pain in the a*se the whole way!

Now, Blacky is the most laid back pony ever usually, and will do anything I say.
I have never ever in 8 years felt unsafe in any way on her!

I decided to take her on the roads and round the village today, she's done this plenty times, and even if she hadn't, usually has no problem with new routes.
She was playing up a bit, trying to turn around to go back  but I know that usually means she has to go toilet, so eventually she decided on a place to go and that usually means we're good to go :p

There's a bit we have to go over a road, not busy but it's a main road!
Got over it fine, and then half way up the next road she kept stopping like she'd seen something on the ground and spinning round trying to go back the way we came.
I turned her around a few times then she just stuck her head down and trotted off really fast back the way we came. Now, she's a chunky girl and no way could little me stop her!
First time ever i haven't been able to stop her.

She has no stamina however so slowed to walking pretty quickly although i had to jump off when she was still walking, she would not stand still.

Walked her back up the road to past where she had spun, distracted her with a bush  and hopped back on after a few attempts to get her to stand still!

Took about ten steps before she did the same, but this time she just cantered back up the road :(
Should probably point out cantering is her least favourite past time lol.
Worst part was I couldn't stop her for the road and she just went straight over it :( Luckily no cars but it scared me!

I got off when she slowed again, and walked her for a bit then got back on, and went home.

So, any ideas what would make her do this?
And what would you have done with her at this point?

Do all the normal checks maybe? Might she have hurt herself in the field or something and this was a warning for you?

Hope everything is ok though and it was just a bad day for her :)

Oh no :( Must have been scary!

I would have probably done the same (took her back to where she started) But I think when it gets dangerous and because it's on the road you did the right thing going home. Perhaps ask a friend to hack out with you next time, do you think it was because she was scared of something? Or just being a moo?

ETA because it is out of character for her, I agree with ^^^ above post, get her teeth, back, saddle etc checked.
:)

Nope, I checked her the first time I got off her and she's fine :)
I don't think there was anything there to scare her, just grass and road :s

She's our only rideable horse at the moment lol, so can't hack with anyone else but she's never been bothered with hacking alone before. It would help though, she'll follow anyone :p

I think she was just being a moo :p
Will say to YO about getting stuff checked though!

You know your horse well enough to know that it's not normal behaviour for her. I wouldn't have thought that there was anything more that you could have done.

id give her a few days off, to see if she had pulled something. Id then lunge her for a day to see how she goes, if all ok id hack the same route with a safe friend. if any more problems id get back, vet etc done.

Never thought about her smelling something, could have been that!

She seems perfectly fine in herself, and happy in the field lol.
She's not mine, she's at a rescue centre I volunteer at, but she won't be ridden for a few days anyway :) And Kim had shoes on so she should be ok to ride out with her the next time too!

Just sounds like napping to me, perhaps she wasn't in the mood to be ridden or didn't want to be away from her field mates and could just be a one off. I had to laugh a little because she sounded just like Lyric when she doesn't want to hack out, except she does it in company too if she is that way out, although I realise it was very dangerous for you. Glad you both got home safely and hope it is just a one off. I don't really see what else you could have done without putting yourself even more at risk.
