I have an 18 yo broodmare who was suddenly lame on her offside shoulder and didn't want to move the leg at all and kept her head low. Was still eating and drinking but obviously in pain.

Did usual bute and rest for a few days then called the vet as no better and a lot of swelling. Vet wanted to do xrays so came back with machine and xrayed. Inconclusive of course, no shattered shoulder which was a relief but not better. We started antibiotics and continued danilon and/or bute. The leg and shoulder area swelled massively as did between front legs, almost a hot spot on the point of shoulder.

Big disagreements with vet on treatment, she wanted PTS and we wanted to gently continue as mare eating, drinking and getting about slowly so not in distress.

Vet advised box rest but leg and shoulder swelled so badly we made the decision to turn her out (or shoot her!) as skin was oozing lymph fluid it was so distended.

That worked and swelling eased, since then we have better days, which outweigh the bad days and are limping along. Continuing with bute. No one has any idea what is wrong, abcess suggested? Anyone any experience and also what antibiotic would you give for that or suspected bone infection.
Any suggestions please to speed recovery, thank you for reading my long post.

Really no idea. Do you have a Horsepital she could be referred to for a more in depth investigation? Could be she needs some sort of scan, further tests.

Do hope you get to the bottom of this, poor mare.

lymphangitis, blackleg?? Suggest both to vet and see if it sparks any thoughts - she has the advantage of having seen your mare so it might prompt some lateral thinking. Vibes )))) hope she gets better soon xo
