I have a 5 and a half year old border collie. He is nice and active and has three walks a day. Recently he has been having problems with his hind legs/back area. He started by occasionally pulling himself along on his bottom which I thought was a sign of worms so wormed him. However, there are times when he will go to get up and his back end is a little lower than usual.
He also has trouble getting in and out of the car at times. However, other times he is fine. If he is looking stiff I say "walk" and he immediately looks sprightly and limber, so not sure if it's psycological.
When on a walk he chases his frisbee and chases his ball and shows no signs of stiffness or difficulty moving.
Could this be the onset of arthritis? Something more serious like bone issues? General stiffness at the beginning and end of the day?
Do border collies suffer from any breed specific issues?
I am going to take him to the vet on Tuesday but would appreciate any thoughts or ideas. Thanks.xx

Might have tweaked his back, might have issues with his hips/arthritis, the vet can carry out x-rays and recommend a drug or supplement if there is wear and tear on the joints.

Pulling himself along on his bum would indicate his anal glands need cleaned out, rather than worms.

I would be assisting him in and out of the car/up and down stairs/on and off sofa/keeping him on the ground until you know what is wrong, if there are hip issues then the impact on landing and taking off will not help.

Hip dysplasia is one of the health problems I have heard of with the breed. I would try not to worry to much until have seen the vets :)

Thanks for the ideas. Hadn't considered anal glands but def could explain the 'bottom pulling!' Will keep lifting him in and out of car until everythings checked out.xx
