Any ideas for cheap but effective lunge pens?

I would like to build a lungeing pen, to also use for emergency "turnout"/fresh air when it is too wet to use paddocks. I am sure the most long-lasting method would be to build as for an arena, but has anyone had success with cheaper or DIY methods? Especilally for a workable surface but which will inevitaby get dug up and rolled on.

I would be interested to hear what has worked for other people on a budget.

Second-hand builders temporary fence panels (the metal mesh ones) and wood chippings blagged off local tree surgeons - works providing there not too many horses using it and it's built on well drained land.

^^ This. Search eBay for Harris fencing and make sure you remember the concrete blocks to hold them up! Put down wood chip inside.

My old yard had builders fencing and builders sand, fencing was good sand was a no go! In winter completely boggy and horses get covered and in summer ground rock hard!
