The person in question was fussing about whether or not her 'poor pony' is damaged because of fall. My comment isn't going to make that OP feel self conscious or paranoid about something to do with her personal life. Total difference to someone just being downright nasty about someone else's appearance for the sake of boosting their own morale.

Could not give a fig about their appearance, more what they are going to do with it, that bothers me. Oh, by the way my *morale* does not need boosting as I am of an age where I don't give a damn.
 
Whether its right or not to ride a horse when over a certain weight is a matter of opinion and opinions vary greatly. There is a class a the New Forest breed show, were the rider is weighed at the ringside and must be over 12 stone to enter, the maximum a New Forest pony can be is 14.2. What I hate is the general nastiness by women usually aimed at women.
 
I absolutely adore my OH. He's gorgeous but currently he's too heavy to ride my horses. Nothing sexist or unkind about it. The animals welfare comes first.
I told him to ride his bike instead.
 
Didn't get beyond the weight post. Too heavy to ride most equines, I'm afraid.

OP, without meaning to sound like a bitch, I do think you will need to lose a bit of weight before you and the horse you ride will/can enjoy yourselves.

Don't take this thread or my post as an insult, but use it as a motivational tool to get fit, be able to wear nice riding clothes that flatter rather than embarrass- which I know is hard, given how unflattering jods are at the best of times.

PS, off topic- Mrs B. As a forty something with too much time on her hands, I greatly appreciate your signature! :)

hahaha. totally agreed. i wrote that in another thread a couple of weeks ago and the op took offence for me saying it...its absolutely true (especially in america)...u ask the people why they ride harleys and some will say they like the thrill but they can't find a suitable horse...

Machinery has weight limits FFS...why not a living breathing animal? Why is it being rude pointing out the blindingly obvious?

FWIW....18/19/20 stone is just that.. whether it's muscle, fat, feathers or lead or whether it has testicles attached or not I don't care....it's too much.
Horse first. Like it or lump it.
 
The Royal Horse Artillery horses carry around 22 stones, up to 18 stone riders, plus 4 stones of equipment/tack. As long as the horse is big enough and strong enough to do the job I don't have a problem with larger people riding. I'm a chunky monkey myself and wouldn't dream of riding a small fine pony, despite my 5'3" height looking ok on one.

Horses for courses and all that.

That weight includes the saddle.
 
Reading this thread I can't believe that people are so eager to make nasty comments to someone about something that is so personal. Whatever your opinion there is a way of saying things that ease the blow. I wonder whether these people making hurtful comments would even think about saying them if they were face to face with the person, or find it easy to hide behind their computer.
 
..perhaps not the best time to mention an overindulgent weekend has resulted in a tight waistband today and an hour of circuit training to make myself feel better..I don't like Mondays! (tell me why)

OK, this is once again being taken too far!!!

I am going to say it out very loud now, I own two horses and a Shetland pony and I weigh 23 stone!!!!!! My horses are healthy, happy and fit and the only one who has a back issue is the one who is not ridden. I muck out, fill haynets, do water buckets, lunge, groom, and all the hundred and one other day to day equine jobs that the average sized liveries on the yard do

BUT - when or where did I say that I ride my horses??? I didn't !!! When did the OP say they ride??? They didn't!! (If they did say it somewhere and I missed it then I apologise BUT the essence of my post still stands!)

Does it not cross anyone's mind that maybe the OP is a troll but on the other hand maybe the OP wants to show their equine friend in hand or maybe they just want sensible, practical clothing to wear around the yard whilst caring for the horses. People fall into the trap of thinking that people will only own horses if they ride but it is not true! What is the crime in being FAT - yes I said it FAT, just like I am, infact I am blooming FAT - and owning horses as long as your horses are well cared for, looked after and don't want for anything???

I don't ride my horses because I am too heavy for them but it does not mean that I cannot be a good and responsible caring owner. Why should a fat person have to take up another hobby other than horses?? OK, take up another hobby other than riding but there is an awful lot more to owning horses than just riding.

I would rather have 10 fat owners who dont ride but care for their horses well than the average sized owners who have a habit of treating their horses like bicycles whereby they turn up at the yard, drag the horse out of its stable, tack up, ride, throw it back in its stable and go home again, all without giving the horse much in the way of time, love, attention and affection??? I am NOT saying that all average sized riders do this and neither more am I saying that all fat owners are halo wearing, non riding saints but it just makes me so damn angry that 'average sized' rider/owners can be so closed minded and think they can dictate to the overweight amongst us that we should not own horses. We should not ride if we are too heavy, I dont and I do not think it is fair for anyone else to ride a horse that they are too heavy for however DO NOT be so damn unpleasant, rude and hateful to people. Read the post and reply to it or not, but read it properly. The OP at no time mentioned riding, they purely asked about equestrian clothing and as such do not deserve the barrage of nastiness that has to raise its head every time anyone who happens to be overweight posts on here.

Being ridden by someone too heavy is a seperate issue altogether but all of you average sized riders out there need to remember that even YOU could be too heavy for some horses.

Its no wonder some girls end up anorexic with this kind of abuse about being overweight - yes, some of us are fat but we still have feelings and do not deserve this level of nastiness.

Why would she want breeches and riding boots if it's not for riding? There is only one other reason I can think of and it's nothing to do with horse care.

Ooh, don't do what I did. Googled Jodphurs and breeches hoping to find links for saddlerys. Blimey, what a surprise !

Of course riders of 18-19 stone shouldn't be on a horse. That's just not fair.
 
Weebarney, as I said in my post the OP may well want to show in hand or may just want equestrian clothing to wear around the yard. We all know that there are many yards out there where your worth is only judged on what you are wearing rather than the person you are.

I have jodhpurs and I have boots but I dont ride. I do however wear them to show inhand and around the yard or when I go to shows to groom for anyone riding one of my horses. I may not look particularly good in them, infact I probably look blooming awful but I am comfortable and suitably dressed for the occasion and that is good enough for me.
