He saw the vet today for his ear. Vet didn't even try & poke anything down it, just injrcted him with steroids, gave me some drops and he's back in Weds morning for another look and possible further investigation.

Now he's done this to himself, when his cone is off hes constantly rubbing his eye, same side as poorly ear.
Any ideas? Obviously i'll be asking the vet on Wednesday anyway.
 
It's an itch/irritation/allergy. Probably related, have you the option of another vet/second opinion, if I were you I would not be happy, you need answers, not more bills and 'we don't know'.
 
Well I think the reason she sent us away was because his ear was too sore to even try to look inside, so she's asked me to bring him back once the steroids/drops have had a chance to work I think. She said thstbif she still cant look in it by Weds she will knock him out & have a look inside.
Do you think it could be the steroids he's allergic to? Or more of a secondary thing stemming from his poorly ear?
I'll definately seek a second opinion if we get no answers come Wednesday.

The one time Abe had an ear infection the vet looked in his ear and gave him antibs that didn't work. So we found a new vet and got an appointment 2 days later well by that point his eye was puffy and red and his gums were swollen on that side also.

Basically he had a normal ear infection which turned into a inner ear infection and caused his face to swell in reaction.

She took a swab and a scrape of his ear gave us some shots and some pills and had him back in 4 days for specific meds depending on the results of swabs.

That's interesting, Im definately going to push for a proper investigation. I will change vets if I have to, but this practise were so good in getting to the bottom of Bryony's problems that I dont want to up sticks and bugger off just yet. We'll see what Wednesday brings.
 
Mum's old GSD used to get sore eyes like that. When mum had to go into a care home and Ushi came back to live with me her eyes cleared up, we think it was possibly something in the carpet at mums which caused the problem and as I have tile floors she was fine here, so would think quite likely an allergy but could well be linked with his ears.
I think vets in the States do tend to go in with harder hitting treatment sooner, whereas over here they try the simple approach first and then move on to the more expensive. An American vet explained it to my daughter that as people pay for medical care for themselves they are more likely to accept expensive treatment for themselves, whereas in the UK people tend to balk at high priced vet treatments.
 
No real advise only an observation that with Flora my first indication that her ears are getting bad (they rarely get an infection but I do have to clean them regularly) is rubbing her face, she too rubs at her eyes on the worst affected side, both with her paw and on me! It maybe is just his ear is sore and hes rubbing that side of his face cos its all hurting. Poor Tys, hope they get to the bottom of it. x
 
Just took his cone off for a bit & he's itching, biting and scratching all over now. Mainly both his eyes and his non poorly ear.
I've stuck the cone back on but he's not best pleased poor laddy.
Hope tomorrow brings answers, he looks like he's wearing red rimmed specs...
 
He reminds me of Bryony when she arrived. No visible signs of mange, although im not too sure whatbim looking for.
I'm wondering if its like CC said about the steroids masking the origional problem & creating a new one... sort of thing.
 
Quite possible re the steriods. Back to vets tomorrow did you say? Hopefully they will get to bottom of it quickly, poor lad. Tilly sends kisses and cuddles x
ETS the steriods, I believe could link in with demodectic mange as they compromise the immune system, sometimes thats all it takes for it to flare up.

It looks alot worse to be fair I suspect from that view as that is the part he is self mutilating (because of the pain/irritation deep down in the canal that he cannot reach:( he could also be rubbing and scratching his face as a result of this. Bit like whe dogs have infected/full anal galnds, they self mutilate other parts of the body as they cannot target/reach the actual pain.
As the vet will have explained/and you suggest J, his ear was possibly far to swollen and painful for her to look down, hence the steroid to take the swelling/discomfort down for a better look (my ear gets repeat infection) and many a time the Dr gives me steroid drops to get in and my ear is so swollen and I hewk at it:o because of the itchiness and pain.
I then go back a few days later for a propper examination and procedure.

I would go back when you are due and let them look down and discuss knocking him out and investigating.
Keep the hood on and see if he eyes and face clear when he cannot mutilate. If it does not clear then maybe allergy tests.
As we have discussed on other poss, skin issues take time and ruling out and he will be in a little discomfort for a little while until you get to the bottom of it but he is a dog and they are tough;) I know you worry for him, thats cos u are a good mammy:D:p and I know u will do every test on earth to get an answer:p
Allergies can include ear problems, but you vet is probably wanting to treat the ear first and foremost to see if the issue is primarily with the ear and treat the rest as secondarys.

Ahh bless he is so brave, now you must be brave because sometimes it has to get worse before it can get better. That might sound harsh but Cayla is right you need to get to the bottom of it so it dosnt reoccur. So keep doing what you are doing.:)
 
Really sorry to read this J-I would definitely be back at the vets soonish but perhaps if you take a photo and then leave his cone on him, you can at least track if it gets better or worse?

I would perhaps speak to the vet about if it's the steroids as that would worry me! I'm pretty certain mange does get worse on steroids though like the poster above says.

I know he's not on deaths door or anything, I just wanted to try and gather as much info and ideas as I could before taking him
Back to the vets today, as invariabley the vet speaks and I have no idea what she's saying :o
.. As it happens I can't get the time off work so OH is taking him anyway, so the above scenario still stands lol :rolleyes:

He's had his cone on for 24-48 hours now & his ear and face are looking loads better Cayla, so I think you're bang on with the self mutilating business.
 
He was sedated and prodded and vet has just called. Nothing untward in his ear, so just a fungal infection aparently. Got to carry on with the drops for a few weeks and it should get better.. She also echoed Cayla that his scratching was just him 'self harming' because he couldn't get to his poorly ear and the route of the problem.
