My mares Urine seems to be very stong smelling. When mucking out i can feel the smell stinging my eyes. This has been going on for a while so it is not partically when she is in season, & the stable is well ventilated. She seems happy & healthy, nice glossy coat etc.

Any suggestions greatfully received

Might just be because its hotter and the amonia in the urine is smelling stronger as the bulk of the water evaporates.

Use on of the amonia busting stable washes, you can get a spray bottle and mist the stable each day. Its what I do and my stable has gone from stinking and stinging eyes to lovely!!

My mare has the same problem I spoke to my vet and they said there was nothing wrong. But you must make sure you remove all the wet as the amonia can give them breathing problems.

I think if we were to wee in our beds and just change the sheets and not wash the mattress, then our eyes would sting a bit.... ever been to a nursing home???

Seriously though, there are things that you can spray..... stable fresh, reosan (smells like bubble gum), green gloop etc.... some will just mask the smell but others actually break down the amonia.

Good luck
