I apologise for all the posts but I am a newbie and just got my first pony - so thats my excuse!

At the moment I am getting to know my new friend and need to get him fit as his old owner said he hasn't done much lately. Eventually I would like to do a bit more with him, I am not competative but I do enjoy the atmosphere at shows and meeting lots of people and horses. I also like to have goals and something to work towards so I was wondering if anyone had any ideas of what sort of thing I could do with him?

He's lively little chap and athough I've only jumped him once, when I tried him, he seemed to have a good jump and also seemed to enjoy it. What I would really like to do is gymkhana but I might stand out amongst the all the kids! Lol! I just want something we can both enjoy together.

To help build up a new partnership I always would recommend having some lessons with a reputable instructor. They can then help you to obtain your aims etc and also they can tell you what type of work to do with your pony. Good luck

well when i got my horse, i first startedd hacking, i found this a great way for me and her to find out little bits about each other, then as the weeks went on i started to shcool her, But when i bought my horse she was totally a novice she did not even no how to canter. so we both had to build up each others confidence. Within three week of owning her i took her to a show and jumped and got second

Thank you for the advice, it is much appreciated. I love hacking so think I will start with getting out for plently of hacks first and do some exploring together! That will help get him fit again too, his belly is rather big and round at the moment from lack of work! Waiting for the farrier to fit me in at the moment though so no riding until he comes! Boo hoo!

Pim is 14.1, ArabXWelsh/TB, 15 years and I am 25 years old. I am a happy hacker really, not competative and have to make myself do schooling! I just like having fun really, I do enjoy jumping and used to absolutely love gymkhana as a kid!

Find out about your local RC. You may find they do adult rallies - training and compay without the stress of 'competing'. At our members shows we have tiny clear round jumping, restricted prelim dressage classes, for those who have not got 60% in a test (and for those of us who are never likely to either!) and new this year is cross pole working hunter for youngsters, novices and the terminaly afraid. We are also having a juniors v seniors gymkhana this weekend. If you join a RC and get involved you could suggest adult gymkhana - if you are interested you can be sure that someone else will too.Try googling British Riding Clubs and looking on their website. Good luck with your new friend and I hope you have lots of fun.

Thank you everyone, you have been so helpful! I am going to look into le trec and the local RC and see what I can find out. I will keep you updated with what we get up to!

Many gymkhanas have age groups so you could do the 16yrs and over, or equivalent. The teenagers will probably all be bigger than you anyway!

You'll have great fun and probably meet lots of like minded people, although some will inevitably be very competitive, as with all the other disciplines.

Good luck and much fun with your new pal!!
