My little dog is a 8 year old French bulldog who has been badly abused over a number of years with a result of damage to her spine and difficulty to walk normally as the back legs do not recieve correct messages from the brain. Other than this she has good health and is a clever little girl.

A couple of evenings ago after eating and a short walk she was resting in her basket. She suddenly woke up and tried to get up and out of the basket, she could not walk properly, kept staggering around and was shaking. I pickrd her up and took her outside, she pooped and vomited a very small amount. Still staggering around like she was drunk, still shivering. I picked her up and wrapped her in her favourite furry rug, she immediately fell asleep and slept for a good 2 hours. When she woke she was well, had no symptoms and has had no reoccurance.

I thought she maybe ate something, but no idea what or it was some sort of seizure?

If anyone has any ideas it would help, I will ask her vet next time I see him but since at the moment nothing to see and the whole episode over so fast I have not done so.

Is your friend sure abuse took place to the severity of causing neurological damage?
Or has she assumed that the dogs issues walking came from abuse?
The reason I ask is it it could be progression of existing spinal malformation(hemivertebrae for example is common in the frenchies)and the history of gait issurd may be relevant

Definately worth a vet check, with neurological and lameness check, sooner rather then later and I would be restricting exercise and access to stairs etc at this point if she was mine. Paralysis or issues with incoordination moving the hindlegs, temporary or not, should always be taken seriously.

Agree with Aru! Does she have MRIs from when the initial diagnosis was made as they could be useful to compare to if she does end up going a bit wrong? Is the dog still local enough to go back to that centre? It sounds like a nerve issue (which thankfully has temporarily resolved) but without an exam could be anything from a seizure to that.

She was taken away from her previous owner by the police as other residents in the block of flats complained due to the noise. She was owned by an alcoholic fellow who beat her over a number of years, she was rescued at 5 years old,her back was severely damaged and her back legs just dragged. At that point. She was given by the authorities to a rescue society who had her for 6 months until I adopted her. When I adopted her she could walk a bit but is much better now due to better food and more exercise.

My vet has checked several times and says she has not so much feeling in her back legs, she does not feel so much if she bangs herself against something. She is now a happy little dog, she eats and sleeps well but can only manage short walks, she will play for hours with her toys. It was a shock when she suddenly had this odd behaviour as in the 2 years she has been here she has had no problems at all. She has had x rays done by my vet and the damage done can be seen. If this happens again I will probably get A scan done but am hoping that it does not happen again. The rescues here do not do scans as too expensive, she had not even had an x ray, when I got her. She walks fairly normally in front but the back does not follow properly , she rocks from side to side, she Kind of scuttles along low to the ground and can actually go quite fast. While standing still she looks perfectly normal it is just when she moves that you see there is a problem. I have a very good vet and there is a well known clinic in the area with all necessary equipment if ever needed. Don't worry she is precious to me and will get any treatment that might be needed.
