Not to do with me, just asking in relation to a friend who may have this issue at the moment.

Ponio has acute liver damage which was revealed after bloods were tested and subject to what vets say, next thing is probably a biopsy.

Anyone been through this kind of thing before and can advise on what to expect, or what normally causes this kind of damage? Also, any words of wisdom re the general prognosis and recovery rates?

I'm worried for my friend and for ponio; he's 14 and awesome - just want him to be better :(

hiya, I work on a yard where we have one with only 30 % liver function resulting from ragwort poisoning earlier in life. Livers can regenerate, although this depends on the extent of the damage. The horse I have mentioned is doing well, you wouldn't know she had the problem looking at her :)

If you search on here there is some info, and I believe 'Box of frogs' (username) has experience in this area :)

Had a pony with liver failiure years ago, all sorts of neurological problems, toxic laminitis etc as a result. Our vet put her on Lactulose which worked wonders as it flushes the body from the toxins which the liver normally would, whilst the liver regenerates (or something). Amazing how well it worked.

The vets diagnosed my pony with acute liver damage and said there was nothing they could do.
I researched and gave her milk thistle capsules in feed (like what people have) and blood liquid(a green liquid supplement) and after a while she was back to full health and passed a 5 stage vetting :) please give it a try
