Right, heard something a bit strange last night.
A friend with working malamutes told me that as they mature physically, their skulls crack down the center and widen (I assume the bone regrows over the crack).
I have never heard this before and can't find any reference to it happening in either mals, nor any other breed.
Has April come early? Or did i learn something new last night?

I've been a VN for 17yrs & never heard of this in malamutes(or a 'Malibu' as 1 client once proudly told me they're dog was!)or rotties.

It is more commonly a myth associated with roties, a few people have said to me (one I was helping with behavioural issues and the other a rescue hand) in and both when asked age replied " not even 12 months as the skull has not done something or other" needless to say when i looked at their teeth they where well over the age they thought they where going by the formation of the skull:D:D

This sounds like a misunderstanding of a term used to describe the foreface in some breeds as they mature. The breed standard for the mal calls for "a very slight but perceptible stop". As in other breeds where the standard asks for a slight but perceptible / barely perceptible stop for immature dogs the stop is often more perceptible. As they mature the stop becomes less perceptible and people in these breeds use the term "the face / stop has broken". It does not mean to be taken literally that there is a physical breaking / fracture of the skull!
