Hi guys,

Hope you are all well.

Would be so grateful if anyone with X-ray knowledge could take a look at these (crap) mobile X-rays of Princes cranial/thoracic/lumbar spine.

I should have got a bone scan or better quality X-ray done at an equine hospital but didn’t want to stress him by boxing him there as he is happy and settled.

The vets comments, from back in May of this year are, “very mild sclerosis of the adjacent DSP’s of three interspinous spaces and one narrowed space.”

I’ve been trying to get my hands on these X-rats since May!

I would be very interested and grateful to hear anyones thoughts on these rather crap mobile X-rays.

I retired Prince in May as I didn’t want to put him through investigative kissing spines work up.

However, since then we have done tonnes of groundwork, getting him to use his back properly, pole work, shoes removed and I’m selfishly yearning to let myself consider the possibility of bringing him back into very low level hacking - just trundelling through the forest at walk.

Anyones thoughts much appreciated xx

Well they're close, and you can see from the white spots that they have touched in the past, but with a good rehab and a strong core then he's a horse I'd be happy to see put back into the level of work you want him to do. There are a lot out there competing whose backs will look worse that that.

For comparison, this is what my horse looked like, there were two more that close on the right. He was unrideable.

Just because I have access to them I would be running these past, and getting an assessment from, Dan Wain rehab trainer and Tom Beech osteopathic vet. X rays are great, but you need a hands on assessment from an expert (who has the right "paradigm" ie understands the in hand rehab process and posture) to decided where to go next. You'll need a very careful approach to saddle fitting of course, and will need to continue the in hand work.

I have a few with kissing spine who stayed in work once the correct rehab work was done and their backs were kept strong with correct ridden work. Second opinion is good. I’ve had ones with worse X-rays stay happy In work.

Thanks very much indeed guys.

I will get in touch with whichever of those recommended chaps is closest to the new forest.

Do you think these X-rays are good quality enough for them to work with?

Kx
Tom comes down to Dan’s yard near the Gaydon junction of M40 regularly or Tom’s The Orthopaedic vet FB page has a day coming up in Surrey

Yes I would book in with Tom if posssible, he has a NF venue with one of the largest teams he works with (Masterson Method, two saddle fitters, trimmers/farriers).

I can't support everyone else's comments enough about Tom Beech and Dan Wain. Realise Dan is a bit far away from you but Tom has built up some really good teams at his clinic venues and you will be in safe hands. It will be worth the trip. I just wish I had know about Tom before my horse had a KS op. I would never go down the op route again and wish I had had the opportunity to re-hab with the right groundwork.
Prince is such a lucky boy!!

Is there a reason why your current vet who already knows Prince can't advise you, Keira?

Keira, I know how special Prince is to you and how tempting it must be and there's nobody whose parade I want to rain on less but can I remind you of something you said last week:

"I think this is what I want too! A pony who I can actually look forward to riding. It’s such a luxury to tack up without the background thought of “will I die today”

Prince might be a very different horse after time off and proper rehab but he might not. Are you sure you want to find out? If you're certain, that's fine but please be really careful.
