i got stuck in a field on tues deep mud on a hill in my vauxhall monterey.driven it today and the anti lock brake light is staying on .the brakes seem to work fine and its going in to garage on monday.am i ok to drive it as need to collect hay.the other brake light isnt on.

hiya,

i am not a mechanic and personnally would not risk running anything on the road which is showing brake problems (even if it seems OK). That said however I have read of abs and esp/traction control system computers having a bit of a hissy fit when used in very low-traction (e.g. mud/snow) conditions which can often just need a computer reset.

hope you get it sorted and manage to get your hay!

again I'm no mechanic but I know with modern vehicles there are sensors everywhere and they can be hyper sensitive to things like dust and mud.Is it a possibility that it could be something as simple as a bit of mud has got into the sensor?

It probably means that one of your ABS sensors is duff, your braking should be ok but if you skid the anti lock system will not work. Best get it sorted asap

Dont know if its the same thing but the red ABS light comes on on my wagon. Ive been told its common and its down to the sensor picking up dust/rust/dirt as its a disk or something that spins round with holes in it. The sensor reads the holes but if they have dirt etc on them then it reads as a fault.. If I turn off the wagon and start it again, it goes off. Im told its an easy fix, you just have to clean the disk??? (I think thats what its called). Alternative is plugging it onto the diagnostic machine which can be expensive.
