My lovely mare was diagnosed on Friday with annular ligament syndrome. Reading between the lines of what the vet told me it seems that if she does not respond to the steroid injection (small chance) then surgery would be necessary. However, no guarantees of success with an operation either.

I am gutted about the diagnosis and wondered if anyone has had experience of this condition with their horse? Apparently is it relatively common but more so in heavier horses.

I feel terrible because it seems to me that she will always be lame and is only 10. Has anyone got any encouraging news or experience of this???

My horse is in the same boat although I don't know what my mare's condition is called. But she is having a steroid injection and if that doesn't work then an op. She's 17 and been out of work for 3 years though so we have to decide if it is worth putting her through an op that may or may not work...

Good luck.

Basically the annular ligament becomes fibrous and starts to rug on the tendon sheath. My horses problem has gone into the fetlock area - the whole problem has also been made worse by the fact that she has windgalls. It can happen to front or back legs. mine is in the off hind. There is no particular reason it is bought on.

As far as I can work out the prognosis is not good - lame permanently when any pressure applied such as being ridden.

My mare damaged her annular ligament in the field and was 10/10 lame (hopping on the other leg). She had a deep groove where the ligament was tight across the other bits. She had a steroid injection into it which made her 3/10 lame then a second steroid jab, followed by 18 months off in which time she had a foal. She has been in normal work since christmas and has not had any problems since, although I have been careful and she isn't the speediest of things. She has thick full feathers so I cant actually see what the groove looks like now. She came sound quickly after the second steroid jab. I don't think its all doom and gloom, some treatments work.

That isn't what my mare has got. Hers is to do with a bone wearing away somehow and leaving a tendon end exposed (that's the gist of it) in her navicular area. Hopefully both our horses will come sound with a simple steroid injection. It worked on Bob, our ex racer, when new bone growing over a old hairline fracture of one of the knee joints and started giving arthritic pain and lameness. He had the injection 2 years ago and has been fine since.
