any one have any Shetlands & shetland foals?

At my yard we have two shetlands, they are turned out with two bigger horses, a 13.1hh and a 14.1hh. They have never been kicked or anything happen despite the 13.1hh being the dominant one. The only problem they've ever had is them escaping as the fencing was fine for the ponies but not the shetlands

Years ago we had another shettie who was turned out with two 16hh TB's

Yep we do. I have a mini shetland, a donkey, a 14.2 and a 16.1 and they all get turned out together sometimes. When they do they love it!

I've been toying with the idea of getting one, for two reasons really. 1. is to keep my horse company. He is a 14.3 sec D. (We have got other horses but one is laminitic so not out at mo & the other hates him & bullies him) & 2. is for my daughter to learn to ride on. Even though my daughter cant even walk yet, i would love her to have a little shetland.

When we had them (many years ago now), yes, so long as there is plenty of room and there not likely to get cornered etc (by anyone feeding or a particular horse that is a known bully), they may be small but they can get out of the way and look after themselves.

Etd to say....not foals or mares with foals at foot, although some horses may not mean to injure, if there feeling playful then they could easily get struck, with them being so small, but adult ones that know how to interact in a heard, yes.

I breed shetlands, and also have bigger horses. We don't turn the bigger ones & the shetlands together.

When we sell, we won't sell small weanling foals to a home where the only other horses are large, but we will sell them from yearling upwards into big horse homes, if the shetlands are going to be a decent size, height or build, and if the shetlands are a nice confidant sort.

Tho I know many people do turn out big horses & shetlands successfully, I do think it's something that should be done with care. If a big horse turns aggressive, it could easily kill a shetland. Even if a big horse is kind, if it is playing, and while playing, catches a shetland with a hoof in the wrong place, it also could kill them.

Yes have a mini in with two 16hh also have two foals coming Sept will spend a small time apart but will go in with the other as soon as possible never had any problems.

Yep i have 2 mini shetty yearling fillies, they are sisters, they are turned out with my boy, he is an ex racer and they love him to bits, follow him everywhere, although he has a bit of trouble trying to groom them lol

Yes we have a 31 inch minature who bosses my 16.1h Percheron around all the time! Before that she was the boss of my 17.2h ID and they have always been fine.

My 23 yr old Shetland lives with a 17hh warmblood, and until 3 yrs ago there was a 16.3hh in the mix too.
He is a 36 inch standard shetland, although my mums horse does give him a hard occasionally, so he has learnt to reverse into said horse and bronch as he does so - take him out and my shetland gallops around screaming for him???!??!!
When he was younger he lived with another shetland, and they escaped into the big horses paddock, and my mums horse cornered him and was trying to kill him. But I just think he's very dominant with other horses, and when he started to go out with them he was sectioned off by electric fence for about 3 months, and then I used to graze him inbetween them all in the main field on a headcollar, until I quietly let him off one day.
In the first week, my mums horse did take a huge chunk out of his back, but they were fine after that.

I guess it depends on the horse really, so just be careful, but with time they will be fine - my mums horse is pretty naughty really and an exception to the rule.

When we bred shetties they were turned out with horses, up to 17.2 MW hunters, no problems but the horses were all nice in the field. They used to shelter inder the big ones! Ajay is out with the whole heard.

My mini goes out with the herd. When we first had him the big mare(boss - 16.3hh) really didn't like him and chased him, thought she was going to kill him!!!!

Fortunately the pony mare took him under her wing, she's quite a bossy mare too, and there have been no problems since.

If I was to do it again, I'd be careful, and introduce them slowly
