jeeez! where on the belly is it?!

Does it hurt if you put pressure on it?! Does it feel hard and firm, or like fluid filled?

It could be an abscess! Could be a bad reaction to a fly bite...........

seen this kind of lump time after time, usually in the summer and caused by flies, should go down in a couple of days. Dont be pushing and sqeezing if you're unsure though, i would give it till monday but ITS UP TO YOU.

Hi, just got back from seeing to him he is only 6, he is prone to fly bites etc but never had anything like that before usually just as big as a 10 pence piece. It is just above his sheath and today when i was touching it he was kicking out etc don't wanna sound stupid but what is an odema

oedema is a collection of fluid in a body area where really it shouldnt be, or should be that much of.
its generally due to inflammation so when a fly bite swells up.... thats due to oedema. Also its prone in old animals they often get oedema in their abdominal cavity etc....... but not in focal spots like yours....

If he is kciking whne you touch it etc that indicates its painful so points moreso towards a hernia, or possibly an abscess or something similar (although these hurt less than hernias). however it sdoesnt totally rule out one MOTHER of a fly bite!

My first thought was a hernia. As it hurts, you definately need a vet, which you have now booked. Please let us know what the vet says.

Haven't read all replies so sorry if I am repeating others advice. From what I can see on the photo it could be a hernia. Hernias vary in severity but there is a chance that the abdominal contents can protrude into the swelling and get stuck which would be a veterinary emergency probably requiring surgery. If I was you I would be getting the vet to look at it as soon as possible. I am not trying to scare you and I hope it is just a MASSIVE fly bite!

It's unlikely to be a hernia in a horse this age unless he's always had it - although theoretically he could have had a treated hernia where the hole didn't close right up and for some reason, something has pushed through. Or it could be a haematoma, or a bad reaction to an insect bite. If it's uncomfortable, I wouldn't poke it to try and find an opening. If it is not going down by tomorrow, get your vet!

Could be a fly bite. My mare got bitten just in front of her udders last year & it really swelled up & took a while to go down. Think vet is a good idea though as should be able to give anti histimine even if it is just a fly bite. Ouch.

The more i look at it is it just me or does he look like he has a scar running along it or am i just being paranoid lol I will be ringing vet first thing tomorrow morning if no better
