any one taught horses tricks ?Esp to kneel down for rider to mount ?

Ive taught my youngster to kneel .It is with intention soon i can get on him (yep im old and unfit )with out a mounting block or leg up .
Have you done this to make your life easier?
And/or what other tricks/stunts have you taught your horse ? Thanks
has anyone taught thier horse to lie down ?
 
I will be following this thread with great interest. I would like to teach my youngster tricks. I have been watching clips on youtube trying to teach myself how to train them to do the spanish walk. I had an attempt of it the other day, to no avail! God loves a trier - so I will keep perservering! xx :)

My mini does tricks, horses are like people, they learn at different rates and somethings sink in faster than others. Some horses just don't want to play, it is the sociable, mouthy, sharper characters that I find pick up things faster than others.

Charley learned most tricks within minutes, especially ones that he already did, or partially did by himself. Rearing, standing on things, crossing his legs, picking up, retrieving, drumming etc, his bow took months, it just didn't seem to sink in, then the other day he was going through his repertoire trying to get my attention and he bowed by himself:D
 
mine will bow, and just randomly do it because she wants a carrot lol.

teaching her to (kinda!) spanish walk... going to start using a whip as an arm extension lol,

she will also spin if i touch her sides and say away... also teaching her to move sideways

am hoping all this will be good when im riding too..... teach her more techincal moves in years to come :)



ets........ for training i use a clicker..! (yard thinks im crackers)... but it works :) its more effective and precise than "good girl" - just have to be accurate with the clicks! :)

Captain says "please" but not when asked, only when he wants something. Stroppy git won't do it to order, but if he wants something he does it.

I agree with the "it is the sociable, mouthy, sharper characters that I find pick up things faster than others. " We have to be very careful what we teach Cappy, he learns so fast. I would love to teach him some tricks so will watch this thread with interest. Good idea for a thread, thanks. :)

The rear came about my accident, she was feeling a little exuberant one day when we were in the field together. So I paired it up with a cue and now we have a nice rear:

The spanish walk was more difficult, as she had the tendency to fold her leg at the knee instead of stretch it forwards. I kept asking though (by tickling her leg behind the knee with a whip) and she eventually got it. I don't have any pics at the minute though, sorry.
 
Just be a little bit careful what tricks you teach your horses to do, sometimes they can backfire on you! :eek: :D

OP, I'd be a bit wary about using that method of mounting for day to day work - I can't imagine its too friendly on the horse's joints to have to stand up from the ground with a rider's weight on board.

I am all for trick training, I think it can encourage a horse to enjoy themselves, try and be rewarded, and therefore fosters a really nice learning environment. However I do cringe when I see horses who are purely trained in tricks and asked to do them quite a lot in one session. Some of these things involve a lot of weight being put on joints which are either fully flexed or at the limits of their extension, and I do wonder about the damage being done to the horse physically over a period of time :(

I do realise this is unlikely to be case for any of us amateurs discussing it on here though :)
 
Rather than getting them to kneel down so you can get on,how about getting them to sit on their haunches like a dog ?
Ermm just imagining that:rolleyes: they get on all 4 hooves and then they have a shake perhaps not:D
