my boy had been poorly and refusing to put on weight and we requested full blood count and liver function and the tests came back he has some sort of liver problem yet after 5wks my vet is puzzled and my boy as started to go in to fits were he just throws him self at the stable walls. my vet has got from not being concerned to very very worried.
she cant explain his fits as say his liver results arent that high that he would be in the end stages of liver damage.

His clincical signs are all normal in the sense he isnt depressed, jandice normally agressive. he has had to so called fits in to days now with the first having the vet called but by the time she arrived he was back to his normal quite self. he started to have one tonight too, but for some reason it just stopped were as last night he was fittting as the vet called it for 45mins.

i have added his blood results in the hope someone can help as we are so worried.
we had a full liver count on the 17/11 and the results are below ( numbers in brakes are the normal ranges)

albumin 31g/l (23-37)
alkaline phosphatase 267 u/l (20-180)
ast 671 u/l (150-600)
calcium 3 mmol/L (2.6-3.3)
ck 497u/l (10-385)
creatinine 99umo/l (40-160)
ggt 189 (10-60)
glucose 3.6mmol/L (2.8-6.5)
ldh 588u/l (190-480)
phosphate 1.04mmo1/l (0.60-1.800)
total protein 77g/l (53-76)
urea 4.4mmo1/l (2.5-8.3)

these were then repeated four weeks later and almost everything had gone up but still the vet says this isnt enough to cause the fits and she has become "very very worried" her words from dont worry he will be totally fine a week ago.

the results on the 21/12 were as follows

albumin 37g/l (23-37)
alkaline phosphatase 307u/l (20-180)
ast 860 (150-600)
calcium 3.4 (2.6-3.3)
ck 483 (10-385)
creatinine 129 (40-160)
ggt 199 (10-60)
glucose 3.6 (2.8-6.5)
ldh 612 (190-480)
phosphate 1.47 (0.60-1.80)
total protein 84 (53-76)
urea 5.7 (2.5-8.3)

IF ANYONE CAN UNDERSTAND THIS AND EXPLAIN WHY MY POOR BOY IS NOW FITTING PLEASE HELP!!
thanks

I don't profess to know about liver probs in horses but I do in people... I would wonder about the possibility of an encephalitits in your horse. This could explain seizures.

In people when in liver failure they can get an hepatic encephalitis as their liver can't rid the body of toxins. Presents with confusion, altered concious state, sometimes fits.... we would check ammonia levels. Has your vet done this?
Like I said I only know about people as I'm an ITU nurse but worth an ask?

Really? I've seen a lot of liver failure in humans and to be fair we're all flesh and blood- horses and peeps! I've also seen a lot of people come through it so fingers crossed x

Yes, horses get hepatic encephalitis too - its when the liver is not functioning correctly, therefore not removing toxins from the blood and these toxins are carried in the blood to the brain affecting its fucntion. This can include fits and seizures.
Your vet should be running a liver function test such as bile acids and strongly considering a liver biopsy (depending on how safe the horse is to handle).
Im going to echo the previous poster who asked if your vet has or is contacting another vet or specialist for advice. She is correct in saying that hepatic encephalopathy would not be expected with those blood results posted but a FUNCTION test also needs to be run. Hope you get a positive outcome.

we have had a liver bile test done and his bile was at 13 and the vet said the normal range is from 0-10 so isnt too high and horses have recovered in to the high 20's. he is having a biopsy on the 6th of jan and a scan to try and see how much damage has been done!!

im in the angry stange at the moment

i know the breeders have loads of horses to deal with and must make a living but surely they would arrange for rag to be removed. im not in anyway slating all breeders/deals but well in this case it was down to then as we are his 1st owners
