This morning I decided to school my mare in her new saddle (we hacked out in it over the weekend just in walk and trot and she was fine - much freer in her trot than previously). This morning I decided to go in the school - nightmare! She was wired from the minute I got on. She can be a hot head anyway, but this morning every time I went from walk to trot she bronced round the school - really doing her best to get me off - a real rodeo horse. After 45 minutes of trying and failing to get a trot which didn't result in airborne manoeuvres, I got off and went for a lunge line. She then went flat out for about 10 minutes on the lunge, bucking, squealing and basically being a pain in the arse. When she finally stopped she was dripping with sweat. She was cooled down and turned out out for the day. Tonight I wanted to try again as I felt really unconfident all day - I got her in, she was absolutely an angel on the lunge - in fact a bit stiff after this morning so I got on her again. She tried to be a cow again, but after a couple of tries, realised that as she was already tired, it was just too much like hard work and I did have some reasonable trot work.
Then tonight someone at the yard said that they'd seen her giving the green light to the geldings over in the field at the back and when I was bringing her in yesterday she was nickering to them as she was being led away - something she's never done before.
She isn't "showing" like she's in season, but is it possible that she is? Or was she just fresh and as she hasn't done any schooling recently, just objecting to doing something other than walking and trotting round the lanes?
I actually have the physio coming out to her anyway tomorrow as this was booked previously. She also had a scintigraphy scan this time last year which showed no problems with her spine at all. So could it be her last season of the year that has caused this? Thank you!

I've known one that became almost unhandleable - she ended up having to be left out for her owner's safety. It was pretty scary, looking back, i wonder if something else was going on.

Our mares are fine but my OH's previous mare was a horror. She'd literally try to pin you to the wall of the stable and would corner you. She would quite often, if given the chance, wrap her head and heck round you and would bite you!

Mine turns into a total nest of vipers just before and during her season.

She will try and kick me, squash me and has a face that would turn milk! I need to be quick on my feet for sure.

I have put her on Oestress this summer and IME it has helped significantly, although she's still very opinionated.

Mines a witch when in season. She has been on oestress and it has made a difference. But to put into context when not in season she produces 70 plus dressage tests. When in season we dont even finish for the trying to throw herself on the floor gallop off and rear so we had to retire.
Yesterday I decided have her ovaries scanned and an abnormalitiy was found so more tests needed im hoping this may be a cause.

hi i know what its like to have a difficult mare,i brought mine as a two yr old and when she was lightly backed at 3 and hacked away for a yr in this time she was an angel, then she started to change rodeo"ing in the school refusing to go forward, refusing to go out on hacks, trying to round you up in field etc etc i had the vet to her and she had cysts on her overies which apparently can be very painfull, she was treated and put on regumate which was fantastic for a while,so it may be worth getting her checked out as apparently it can be quite common.(please excuse spelling ive not had enough coffee yet lol)

my mare has been a right cow bag recently.. maybe this is why.

Apart form attitude changes how can you tell? she' s my first horse! so I'm very newbie to all this!

nothing unpredictable about my mare when she gets her first season of the year, she turns into a very predictable evil biatch:rolleyes: thankfully it is only the first season though and i know as soon as i get her from the field that if i ride i may die so i just groom and put her back out:o
