i have just left college and really dont know what i want to do. im looking into photography! whats business like in the photography world! how do u become a photgrapher, i would just be specialising in equine.
any additional information much appreciated!

Maybe next time you are at a show you could approach the photographer if there is one. You could ask politely how they got into the profession and you could even see if they ever wanted some help/assistance at the weekend and you could accompany them to shows?

If you were doing photography at college then it might stand you in good stead to get experience at one of the established event companies, but a lot of them will require you to have professional equipment and show a knack for it already, otherwise they won't even bother answering your emails.

Failing that, head down to your next local show and talk to the photographers there. We are human, but don't get too in the way as we are trying to scrape a living.

But the hours are long, the weather often bad, the work repetitive, the money poor and I've heard horror stories of photographers not being allowed to go for a toilet break, and then there's the customers...... ;-)

It can be very good fun though, and you do get the best views.

I've replied in your soapbox thread but take heed of Moomin's 3rd paragraph, all in the day of a show photographer

It's true too, you do get the best views... I struggle to take pics now when outside the ring, it's so restricting!

hmmm its certainley given me alot to think about, thanks guys. im looking in to doing a 10 week course which is photgraphy for beginers and see how i get on and maybe approach some photographers in my area.

The firm who photograph events at Pontispool (and probably lots of other local things) are a very friendly lot. I was down there last year just taking shots for my own pleasure. Had a really good chat with the guy at the water crossing, very friendly and not the least bit bothered that I was there with a camera.
