Any preference Mare or Gelding

I wouldn't like a mare becuase i can't deal with the marey behaviors and silly seasons! If i did buy a mare, i'd do so in the summer and have it on trial for a month so i would see what it was like in season....but i'm definitely a gelding lover :D

Love geldings, but hated mares until i got one. But tbh i think if/when you build a connection with a mare its a bit more special then with a gelding :)

I think i would have to say mares :D

I always said i would never have a mare due to seasons, mood swings etc ... But i now have the most sweetest mare EVER. Shes like a loveable dog :p Always happy, no mood swings .. I cant even tell when shes in season shes so horizontal!! Wouldnt swap her for the world.

We have both and I wouldn't discount either if looking for another. I do think you get a better 'connection' with mares though. I adore my lad but I know he would be just the same with anyone who fed him + scratched his itchy bits! Our mare, however, is very different with 'her' people - I think this is partly because she hasn't always had the greatest time in previous homes but I also think it's a bit of a mare thing as I've worked with mares in the past who were fairly similar in attitude. :)

I have a preference for Geldings but does it matter or not?

I always thought that before I bought my mare ten years ago. I had always had (and wanted) only geldings before. However, her character totally captivated me. I was hooked from day one and she still remains my horse of a lifetime, even though injury sadly forced her retirement.:(

Now I believe that generally geldings suit most people best, but if you are lucky enough to find a good mare, you will never look back. I can say that I generally prefer them now.

i dont care so long as it does the job i want it to do, and does it well.

but....after having a cheeky welsh mare for 6 year's i'm definitely biased towards the mares.... :D
but i'd never turn a horse down based on gender. and not all mares are mareish.

'It'?

Mares take everything so much more seriously, if you get yourself in trouble on a mare, just stick with her and she'll sort you both out, get in the same situation with a gelding and you're in it together

I think it's harder to upset a gelding, mares are a bit more sensitive, but if you have a mare that likes you, it's a massive gift

No way! Geldings are more likely to help you out IMO - mares are out for themselves!

Goes to show though... you can't generalise. It's very individual. How anyone could choose between mares and geldings beats me... it's terribly shallow....

I have only ever had geldings so cant really comment - I wouldn't rule out a mare, its just that I found geldings that did the job I wanted when out looking

;) If you can figure out a way for me to breed with a gelding then I'd be very interested. :)

My preference for mares is wholly practical, not shallow at all.:D

I'm most definately a mare person, had them all my life, but now have a gelding!! Not by choice, just that's what my current mare decided to produce for me!! Can't complain at all, but do feel out of my depth with a gelding, they have strange anatomy!!! and do odd things with it!! lol!!!! wouldn't say temperamentally he's any different from the mares i've had though, maybe my mares have always been non marish types?

I have one of each. When the mare is nice - she is wonderful, but when she wants her own way she'll do anything to get it.
My gelding is always the same - his mood and attitude never change.
I have no preference - they are just different.

whats wrong with 'it'. We are talking about a theroetical horse! lol

I would have to say mares. More sensitive and intuitive. The bond I have with my mare is unbelievable- people always comment on it. I dont think i would have that with a gelding. You get a better bond with mares i think. Geldings dont really care who you are x

When we looked for my first pony we had a preference for geldings but I have to say, my 6yr old mare is ten times more genuine than the little blighter of a gelding we ended up with (who is ten times more mareish than her) :D

I now own my first mare. Having known some difficult mares, I was not overly keen on the idea until I met mine.

She is maddening, moody, particular, sensitive, a one-person horse, smarter than any horse I've ever had, and I absolutely adore her. Wouldn't change her for the world.

I love geldings and I would never base my purchase solely on gender. But this mare is such a partner.

Ive got both, and love bits about each of them, i find mares more complex characters than geldings, but like both.
I think its a true saying you ask a mare but tell a gelding :)

i'm not sure tbh, i was thinking about it the other day. I think the saying 'ask a stallion, tell a gelding, discuss it with a mare' that is true. Atm i have a mare and share the yard with 5 others (only 2 geldings at the yard). Having learnt to ride on both thou and still love the gelding that grew up with me, i can honestly say that when i ask him to do something he either simply says no or stands there like a retard thinking about what i just asked him  but when i tell him, he goes 'oooooooooh thats what you wanted' and does what he's told. whereas with my mare, you tell her then you will get an outright no, and a strop for the rest of the time, ask her and if its easy it gets done straight away, if it requires some energy then we will discuss why, how, what and when before she does it with a big sigh.
i agree mares are more sensitive than geldings and easily offended. but i also think that if you get in trouble, mare will get you out of it but a gelding will try to hide in your pocket :o
but i really don't know which i prefer.
put it this way : when i'm having a stressy day i prefer geldings cuz a) dont have to have a discussion about everything b) wont change the way he works or his mood just because im in a bad mood.
when i'm relaxed and calm i prefer my mare a) she responds to asking so not a lot of effort to ask but much more to tell b) better bond c)she'll get me out of trouble :D
