Any recent Osphos use - results?

horse was about 3 tenths lame on off side front nerve blocked to the foot X rays showed slight changes in the navicular bone, slightly less changes in the sound one he had osphos treatment in both with steroid put into the navicular bursa about 6 weeks ago and his about 50% better so I have been told to mri both feet to rule out anything else, so for me not a great result I am afraid:(

Thanks both. Cartrophen was tried and no effect.

There's not a lot online about it (apart from the sales pitch) and my insurance runs out in a few months so looking at all options.

Horse was ill after had to have a lot of blood work taken .
He did the abnormal drinking thing
A vet was telling me recently the practice they work for has stopped using it because of the number of reactions they where seeing .

My older mare has it once a year as well as regular cartrophen and it definitely makes a difference to her, however I use these two drugs more as a cover all, she has not been lame or diagnosed with anything significant.

Thats concerning. This mare is already super sensitive to anything that stresses her system...

Hi there. My mare had a reaction to Osphos after it was injected into her neck. There was a big swelling at the injection site and she was unable to lower her head to drink and couldn't eat . It's difficult to say if it had much effect on her condition (coffin joint arthritis) as she had her joints injected with other medications at the same time but she is currently doing well . I wouldn't use it again !

Works very well for bone pain, seen it used in well into three figures of horses. Dose should be split between 3-4 locations to help reduce any local reaction and given alongside Finadyne to reduce any systemic reaction. Very different drug to Cartrophen but both have their place

Can I ask what it was used for? Was is navicular in all cases?

Bisphosphonates are used (in humans) for two primary diseases: 1 - to treat hypercalcaemia of malignancy (this is monthly injections) and 2) to treat/prevent further deterioration of osteoporosis (this is a yearly infusion).

How this is meant to treat navicular syndrome (caudal pain syndrome) I'm not sure... - unless there is deterioration of the navicular bone itself.

One of the most well known side effects of bisphosphonate use in humans is osteonecrosis of the jaw (though whether this is carried over to equine patients I haven't looked into), and all dental work is discouraged while the patient is being treated with bisphosphonates.

Personally, unless my life depended on it, I wouldn't have any bisphosphonates anywhere near me (my personal and biased opinion from almost 20 years in the pharma industry)
