As the title says really! Just on the lookout for some really good, simple to understand books as me and horsey need some serious schooling advice! I'm currently having lessons which really help but I'm often bogged down by technical references ie I don't really "get" what shoulder in means etc...

Thanks in advance

101 Jumping Exercises for horse and rider is very good, and there are some great exercises in it to try out

Elements of Dressage: A Guide for Training the Young Horse by Kurd Albrecht von Ziegner

I've found this book very usual. I don't know how relevant it would be to you as it refers to training young horses from about the age of 3.5 to 5.5 years but it does have some good techniques and sets things out well, in a logical order of progression.

"With this title, the author has developed a useful tool for any horse person interested in riding and training a horse for dressage, eventing or jumping. This book was developed to help riders, trainers and judges understand what it takes to train a horse classically so that it can be successful in any discipline. Here, the author presents his "training tree" concept. It outlines the ten essential elements of classical basic training and shows how the elements are related and in what order they should be achieved."

I have 101 schooling exercises and think it is great too. It has diagrams that show you where you should go etc.

Just a thought, if you aren't understanding things in your lessons maybe you should swap instructors?? Or maybe you could ask more questions, a good instructor won't mind if you ask for clarification.

Good luck!

I have both the 101 schooling Excrecises and 101 Jumping Excercises and both books are fantastic. The jumping Excercises also includes lots of ground pole work so you don't have to jump!

Think I'll get the "101 Schooling exercises" then!!

daydreamer - It's not my instructor thats the problem - she is very good and I understand most of the exercises she asks me to do. It's me, I struggle to remember my right and left and my brain can't handle anything remotely technical! Just thought it would help to do some reading up in between lessons so that I can grasp things a bit easier!

Try tying a ribbon or something around your right forearm. I did this in my driving test (although I used a piece of blue tack on the right side of the dashboard) stupid sounding I know but it works!

I have the 101 schooling exercises and 101 jumping exercises and a good book I have is `Not quite the perfect horse` which I think is brilliant and another I have is `Dressage tips and training solutions` by Wolfgang Holzel. This uses a German Training System. It has training exercises and then each bit has a question and answer in case it isnt going to plan, eg, problems and tips for solving. It is very useful.
TBH I have loads of flatwork and jumping books but the Dressage tips and the not quite the perfect horse are my favourites.
I bought them from Amazon.
