Hello!

Just wandering if there are any shooters/beaters on here..

3 weeks ago we rescued a 8 month springer - he was due to be PTS the next day, We've taken him on temporarily to stop this from happening and give him another chance. Anyway long story short, in the 3 weeks of having him he's been castrated, walked, socialised etc etc..

He's a nice enough dog, great with other dogs, clean at night (in a crate) and knows the basics (sit, stay lie down and has a reasonable recall).. The owners wanted to get get rid of him because he nipped the husband... but having done some digging i think a lot of the owners problems with him were just general things a young pup does (watching the birds out the window, chasing flies and milling around wanting fuss all the time - these were their biggest issues)..

He's come in, we've had a few set twos and he's learnt that he doesn't behave like that. If he's at all aggressive, it's usually either to do with the crate or feeding. I can now make him back up and sit several times throughout his meal without any aggression.. in regards to his crate, he's fine if you put him in it and leave him.. he doesn't like any sudden movements near the cage (and will lift his lips), which makes me think someones done something to him/the crate that's upset him.

Anyway, we've had over a week of good behaviour, i've narrowed down the aggression triggers. This dog is besotted with birds, all he wants to do is watch them out the window, work through hedges out walking and what not - so with this in mind, i think he'd suit a working home (and possibly even somewhere that would kennel him).

I don't want any money for him - literally just want to find the best home for him, and of course, the most suitable home.
Does anyone know where i can advertise him? does anyone know anyone looking for a new pup to bring on for beating?

Sorry long winded post, but need to start thinking about it as i don't want him to become too attached to us - and we cannot keep him due to already having 5 spaniels.


ETA; He might also suit a farm/active outdoor home.

All 5 of my springers work and i train them from scratch - so i know working dogs well... I think he'd be more suited to the beating line if i'm honest, rather than picking up - but that being said, from what i've seen he would retrieve with some work. He does bring stuff back and picks things up... so i think, with the correct training he could be formed into a nice all round working dog.

His parentage all shoot - so it's in the blood!
 
I think a spanner that doesn't prioritise a retrieve is a plus. And yes I think he sounds very rehomeable. BUT I would use a rescue like Spainel Aid to do it. The pup that Thistle recently saved, I could have done it myself but it was better done through a rescue. (IMO).
 
Thanks Clogagh.. I think I might message spaniel aid and see if they can help. He’s a nice dog and I think we’ve ironed out the problems, and are aware of the tendencies. I’m certain he’ll make a fab beaters dog. Will also join that page!

Contact Buddy's rural animal rescue, they specialize in rehoming working dogs and have professional gundog trainers on hand to assess him, please don't advertise him yourselves...

perhaps I should have mentioned in my original post, that I have rescued and rehomed SUCCESSFULLY 3 springers already. I would never just let him go to anyone and certainly not without several meetings, a home check and contract in place. Previously I have managed to rehome through word of mouth but those were more pet suited spaniels, I just feel this guy would suit a working home best - hence why I put this post up as someone may have known someone looking.

I also train gun dogs.. having trained my own successfully (beating and picking up) and assisted in others training too..

We are off to Tresco to work on their shoot next weekend picking up with our guys so I think I’m going to have a word with their game keeper. I’ll have a look on that page, but in my eyes, whilst I am able to do a similar job To them, I just as well keep him here and carry on with trying to rehome him.
It leaves them one more space to help another spaniel.

ETA; just checked that page out, how amazing are they!! That’s the sort of thing I’d love to do down here.. I have emailed them and explained what I’ve been doing and am doing. They may have had a request from someone looking for something like him.

Yep, am over the moon - another successful rehome job i'd say (even though it's early days). He's gone to live in the countryside with a couple who pick up 5 days a week. They've got a team of 10 dogs and have experience with aggression. The husband is a gun dog trainer.

I've received lots of updates - he's settled in really well and they've already started training him and are mega thrilled with how quick he's picking things up.

Don't apologise, i know where you were coming from completely. Ahhh maybe, i will never say no, but i think this has taught us we need to be aware about our guys - they are so easy going, its easy to forget. The dynamic in the pack once he left was quite interesting, they all came in and settled the evening he went and they'd not been able to "settle" in the few weeks he was there... Funny really!
