He went very lame very suddenly yesterday. Vet came out to see him and thought an abcess but cut away bits of the hoof and couldn't find anything. He had to be sedated for all this

Today he was even worse and couldn't stand on it. Vet came out again and took the bandages off, and all this gunky stuff came out

it was foul! Stunk to high heavens and a lovely dark browny yellow colour.
He couldn't see where the pus was all coming from though so just gave the hoof a thorough rinsing with disinfectant and re-poulticed it (which took a lot of doing but managed without sedation!)
He's on bute twice a day but isn't that keen to eat, and is on box rest for two days when vet is coming back out to see him.
He's very unhappy at having to stay in and away from his girls so he'd love some HHO hugs

My friends horse did this last summer when it was real wet!!!Sounds like he has got what they call gravel, the sole softens sooo much due to the wet weather infection is easily penetrated,it cripples them mostly!!We thought he had pulled something or punctured higher up as he struggled to move from the hip down!!Contacted farrier for advice, abcess was his answer, low and behold the day after it burst!!If it has burst and oozing pus you are on the way!!I would get ya farrier out to have a look, far more effective than a vet and cheaper!!Her lad didnt need box rest or antibiotics!!Sure he will be fine!!Keep us informed

Also an abcess in the foot can burst through the coronary band, bugger sent it before i finished, lol!!!However can burst threw the foot!!I would strongly recommend you ring ya farrier before the vet comes back, chances are he can sort ya boy before the vet does and will be a huge relief on ya pocket!!!Hope this helps??

(((Hugs))).

If you dissollve the bute in some water you can syringe it, or someone I know makes a paste of custard powder & icing sugar to a paste then adds bute & syringes the mix in. It sounds odd but it seems to work & was suggested by her vet as her big WB wont eat feed with bute in & is rather anti the bute & water mix - she gets more of it than he does!

thanks you two

he ate his breakfast ok this morning so his getting his bute, just mustn't of felt like eating before.
We're a rescue centre so we get cheaper vet anyway, and he is coming back out anyway to jag the iguana who had to have his tail amputated
