I had a very experienced horseman yesterday tell me a thing to try on Tex's proud flesh.


I had not heard of it before so thought I would ask if any of you had heard of this.

He suggested to sprinkle Tex's wound with barn lime to decrease proud flesh, help dry it out and promote healing.

We are off dressings now altogether and it is drying out pretty nicely but we are being left with ALOT of dead tissue to deal with.


Has anyone heard of this before?


if so, what is the science behind it.

Barn lime is sprinkled in stalls after they are cleaned and prior to adding bedding to reduce ammonia odor.

What do you all use in your stalls and barn for this purpose?

ETS: No idea if its true or not, but if of any help, if it is limestone, then they used to put it on dead people to help decompose them, so maybe if you put it on proud flesh it helps get rid of it? :P

I 'think' regular lime is quite different to barn lime though. I may be very wrong, but I think barn lime is mainly calcium and bicarbonate


Oh I will just stop now...I really have no idea what I am talking about

but I do know they are different!

I found this about lime:

"There are two different kinds of lime.

Hydrated lime, slake lime, or "burn lime"- This is pure white. Hydrated lime is very caustic, so the bag will have a warning on it. This is the kind of lime you use for white wash . This lime will burn you and your livestock. Do not use it on the floor. Do not breath it.


Agricultural lime, "ag lime", "garden lime", "barn lime" or dolomite- This lime is gray and can be used to spread on the floor of your barn. This is safe for you and your livestock. It will not burn. We spread this lime on our barn floor because it provides an antibacterial quality, dries out and "sweetens" the floor"

Thought I'd post this now, but am off into the realms of google and snake oil to see what else it says about lime.

A thread in COTH spat this little gem out:

"MSG - monosodiumglutomate (Accent) DOES work at removing proud flesh. As does brown sugar and iodine mixed as a paste."

and apparently, one of the main ingredients of Wonder Dust is .............lime.

"Farnam Wonder Dust
Dressing powder and blood coagulant for use wounds, cuts, abrasions and capillary bleeding. Stops bleeding fast, dries up wounds quickly and controls tissue granulations. Aids in the prevention of proud flesh."

Hmmm........sorry about that, the equine rescue link seems to have gremlins and isn't showing the article I hoped for.
