I had a phone call today from a potential livery, she told me she was buying a pony for her 8 year old who had been riding since the age of 4 at a riding school. The lady admits she is inexperienced so wants to keep her new pony at livery so she can learn what she needs to do before she takes it home. So it sounded like a good idea. Until I asked about the potential pony - it is 3 years old, unbroken and she was expecting to break it with the help of her daughter and father. I told her to stay well clear as she has no experience, the child is a novice rider and her father broke shires to harness about 20 years ago under instruction. She has now cancelled the viewing ( thank god) and asked me what I would recommend. I have told her to look at loaning a schoolmaster and to contact the pony club, veteran horse society, horse world. Can anyone come up with any other suggestions for finding a 13'2 childs first pony that she can enjoy.

Mare and Foal Sanctuary in Newton Abbot may have something they often have ponies

But definitely if first time and no real knowledge those loan schemes they do at a lot of livery yards for kids would be ideal.

sorry a rubbish reply because I cant help at all but am looking for something similar myself so if you have good ideas I shall be watching this thread with interest. Have tried all usual feed room/ saddlers / websites and such ponies seem to be as rare as rocking horse poop!

She is looking to keep it at my livery yard as she will have lots of help and we are used to getting novice owners up and running with horse ownership. She has already done a share at a riding school and it was useful but not wholly successful as she can only ride when they say so and the pony is really only a riding school plod and she wants one of her own. She will have a good support network and i will be overseeing everything and making sure the pony is well looked after.
