Hello Gang - My silly mare had a hissy fit with the farrier yesterday and it ended up with her getting her foot pinched with the pincers. There was some blood but not alot and the farrier scraped it back a bit more and treated it with some peroxide. This morning it wasn't that hot and she was only lame for a couple of strides on the way out to the field. You can't even see any hole or anything but it is obviously bruised. Any suggestions to help make her more comfortable.

Personally, I would have kept her in for a few days to make sure it had 100% healed up. Would not want to chance an abcess forming.

On monday, a client of mines pony trotted up lame. No heat in leg so I picked out her foot, and large part of her frog just fell off (it was REALLY gross). You could see it went down to sensitive tissue, so I shoved a poultice on it to keep it clean and told her to call the vet. When he arrived he said I'd done exactly the right thing and she is on box rest while her frog hardens up again. He reckons a week although she is now sound when we trot her up but cannot risk infection. (He is also coming back to do x-rays to find out why her frog came off, very odd. Rotated pedal bone has come into discussion as she has a laminitus history! Eek!)

That is what I'd do anyway. Good luck.

Yes in a perfect world I would have kept her in as well!! However I am on such a small yard that they go absolutely fruit loop if they have to stay in. I would have to keep them all in and I don't think the other owners would like that. There is no hole as such as the farrier has trimmed it right back but she is very foot sore!!

There might not be a hole, but if it bled he went back to sensitive tissue, so the chance of infection is more likely.

However it's too late now, but if she does get an infection, she'll have to stay in for longer...
