As the title really, I'm wondering how many of you have m/weight turnouts on your tbs atm? My mare lives out 24/7 and has her lightweight on at the moment but as it's getting colder thinking of putting her in her medium weight.

What everyone thoughts? Are you waiting for it to get colder?

:)

We've started doing a MW at night just this week and we started upping her feeds about a month ago, (she's on Bailey's No 2 and Hi Fi chaff+Biotin if anyone interested) summer is officially over...

All my tbs are in med weights at night, it's cold here and mine never grow a winter coat which is great as I never have to clip them. If warm enough they are bare during the day if it's dry. Also I can't stand grey horses rolling in the mud it's my pet hate. Mine will stay out while the nights aren't bad so rug them well instead

It really is horses for courses etc ... I have some TBs in MW and even one horse in a HW but he always struggles with winter so I'm getting ahead of him - on the same field are three ex flat racers still unrugged and one I know throuh experience will go the winter unrugged.
I keep a very close eye on them, and try to be one step ahead of them feeling the cold. It might look fluffy, but it makes more economic sense to me to be keeping horses warm if you know they are capable of dropping weight before you can run up the field with a rug... rather than having to up the feed in retrospect.
They are all still living out and I'd like to have them out 24/7 for several weeks yet - but again they are very good at telling me what they want - if they start queuing at the gates with pleading eyes they come in overnight!

Yeah I'm thinking of popping hers on now then at night ill just swap the rugs over in the morning to her light weight depending on the weather.

Yeah maisies hard feed is huge now but it's the right size breakfast and dinner :)

Oh the joys of winter :(

I know - depressing isn't it! Consider it easing yourself in... weaning yourself onto changing rugs before you have to wrestle with a wet, smelly muddy 6'9'' HW whilst the mud seeps over the top of your wellies and your fingers threaten to snap off with frostbite... What a lovely fun hobby we have!!

Ooh I feel really mean now :o
My TB is out naked every day, and in at night in a full neck fleece or a stable sheet at night (although he was in a LW stable rug last night as forecast was v cold). Wasn't planning on using a MW til he's clipped..

I've been trying to hold off properly rugging as he is getting furry for clipping ATM.

I also have the only TB-type on my yard (rest are cobs, natives and one IrishX) so am always made to feel like I'm over-rugging anyway, even if it's just a fleece!! :D

Mine are all still out 24/7, in LW rugs with no feed just on grass. And having wandered round all our fields today I think they will be staying out 24/7 for the forseeable future the grass is so lush and their poos are green as grass so think they are having a fantastic autumn flush. The longer they are out the better financially and the less mucking out. They are all in fantastic condition so won;t move to medium weights till I clip.

Mollya don't feel mean, what your doing seems perfectly acceptable to me ;)

I always let my girl grow a coat, it is a much more effcient method of keeping warm than any rug and my favourite horsey job ever is clipping!! Not that I am any good at it but the curls of hair that fall away like feathers! Wonderful!! Anyway the thicker coat under the saddle helps reduce sore patches etc etc! To this end, she has only worn her fleece for the last three nights, there comes a time when the cobby pony over the yard is wrapped up and your TB isn't that you feel a tiny bit guilty!!

my horse is in a HW!!! he's part TB and part bog pony/ part WB...but i'm trying to prevent him turning into a hairball. oh and he's had his first clip already so want that to stay until the eventing season ends...

my TB is still in a LW but would prefer him to be in a MW but he's on loan so keeping my nose out ;)
