My old Standard Poodle is really not well. He is 9 years old and neutered. Has always been active and healthy and always on the lean side.
Over the last month he has lost 3.5kg in weight, going from 23.6kg to 19.9kg.
He has been vomiting yellow bile most mornings, just liquid. He has now started throwing up whole kibble at times too, usually a good length of time after eating, though he is barely eating anything at all. He is mainly lethargic and depressed but with periods of being his normal self. Blood tests have come back fine and an ultrasound showed nothing other than a thickening in the intestinal wall. His temperature and heart/breathing are fine. He has no diahorrea and doesn't appear to be in pain. He intermittently coughs, sort of a cross between a cough and a wretch.
Im taking him back to the vets tomorrow but just wondered if anyone had any thoughts on this?? Im driving myself nuts with it all and I strongly suspect cancer to be honest :(

Ditto what gunner gundog has said - I have just posted on another thread about my lurcher who had lymphoma of the gut, this was how it was found, when they operated following an x-ray they found the whole gut was massively inflammed when all that had shown was a thickening of the gut wall :(

Ok bloods were taken during the initial consultation, just a basic blood panel which showed nothing out of the ordinary. I think the vet said the thickening was in the all intestine???
The vet has said we can do x-rays but also the option of a laproscopy under GA. He did say that thickening is often how tumours start out and are usually malignant.
I'm so worried about my boy and the not knowing is the worst feeling :(

I hope you can get some answers tomorrow. With my boy, the vet took biopsies during the operation which had to be sent off for analysis before lymphoma was confirmed - the 'best case' scenario for him was an acute irritable bowel syndrome, but he was very very unhappy by that point (he had been at the vets very regularly and I was about to demand a referral to Bristol) so I made the decision to PTS before he came round properly from the anaesthetic.

It has never been a decision I have regretted for a second, although he was my 'dog of a lifetime' and I loved him so much. It was 5 years ago on 4th December, and I miss him so much still :(

I would be wondering if there is something going on with his liver or else concerns over something nasty in the gut itself - thats an awful lot of weight to loose so fast.

If you're regular vet isn't sure whats going on then get a referal to a specialist vet hospital for a second opinion sooner rather than later

I showed my daughter (a vet) the original post last night, and her immediate thought was this - megaesophagus.

Vet going to do x-rays on Monday as looks like Zeus' heart is now starting to fail (he has developed a horrid cough over the last 72 hours and his heart is beating very fast, panting alot) as a secondary problem to what is most likely lymphoma cancer :( Obviously this isn't conclusive til more tests are done)
Home armed with a bag full of heart pills etc and seems comfy righ now xx
