Mine are kept away from the gate with an electric fence (well the tape there’s no current through that bit). And, thank goodness, tend to not see people outside their field as potential sources of food.

This worries me too.
lots of obvious signage. Do not feed, your kindness can kill etc. Think BHS have some. You shouldn’t have to but sadly needs must.

Electric tape so there is a space between they can’t reach into.

if you have a local group for your town/village etc perhaps pop a post in there. I live in a very touristy area and we have had a huge amount of walkers visiting (shouldn’t be but hey ho) and stopping by the horses.

Would you feed someone’s dog? No. I can’t understand why people seem to think horses are an exception that can stomach all sorts of shite like bread potato and grass clippings ?

The amount of signs we have is so many. We are maing ones like, you wouldn't like it if i fed your kid. We've put posts on the local village things but still no joy and if anything its getting worse :/

The most success I've had is, engaging with the public on a local level.

I've post on our local FB Group page, put up some personalised signs and sent literature to local clubs and schools; basically, anyone likely to actually walk the footpath that crosses the paddocks including rambling clubs.

It won't stop everyone but it has reduced unsolicited feeding quite significantly.

I do double-fence but that doesn't always stop the determined amongst them to get past that security system.

On the plus side, a lot of the locals now keep an eye on my ponies and are not afraid to challenge anyone they think are interfering with them without my knowledge or consent. That is a real help :)

My husband confronted a man today launching food over our gates (entrance to our driveway) into the field!! All I say is good job it was him and not me who caught him!!! Hubby told a porkie and said my pony has laminitis and that she is not to be fed under any circumstance. The bloke then had the cheek to say what I can’t even feed her some carrots??!! No, when is it ok to feed other peoples animals? Makes me cross, you wouldn’t feed a strangers dog without permission! Rant over ?

I was only reading today, on another webbie site, that EVEN some horsey folk DO NOT GET that carrots can prove fatal. It certainly is an uphill struggle :( I hope the #stopfeedingourhorses along with the Parliament petition result in a change in the Law. But, until then, us poor "ponios' with special needs" owners will have to continue to live on a knife edge  x

We have signs up all the way along our fence lines, some simple and some detailed - still doesn’t stop people from feeding them :( our boy seems to be okay because he’s always down the other end of the field but I don’t think they’d try with him because he’s muzzled!

I honestly don’t think you can. I have signs on the gate where people stop to feed my ponies and they stand right by the sign and feed them. It’s right outside my house too and when I’ve asked people not to do it when I’ve caught them in the act, I either get abuse or they don’t say anything and skulk away then do it the next time they are passing too. I ended up bringing the ponies who live in that field in during the day to avoid it.
