Taking my 5 yo to our first Trec training day in 2 week (really just to practice getting him.out) can anyone advise anything we should practice beforehand? i know its a training day but dont want to look like a total.numpty :-)

From experience, most treccies are really nice, so don't worry too much. :D

If you want to get him used to a few things though:
Get him walking/trotting behind you when you're leading, teach him to stop/slow down without coming up really close behind you. Led obstacles are done with the horse behind you.
If you have anything "scary", like a tarpaulin, that you can get him to walk over, you might find the footbridge easier.
In preparation for low branches, get him used to you leaning down on his neck.

You can use wooden poles to have a go at the S bend, canter corridor and rein back through poles. Pretty easy to set up even if you don't get the distances right. Do them in hand first to get him used to it.

Could practice the 'stand and walk away' thing (not sure of technical name:rolleyes:) Just take him in the school as him to stand and back away. I usually practice by walking all the way around him about 5 feet away.

As above, tarp. you can rig up low branches with the canes they use in gardens balanced on the top of jump wings.

Go through bending poles using cones or buckets - whatever you can find.

Enjoy. You will have fun. Trec is great. Although we always get a bit too excited in the competitions to do any good.:o

As above, but remember the training days are for training, so you don't need to be able to do any of the PTV stuff before you go, there's loads of help, tips and support when you get there :D

Immobility. :D
You can do this mounted too.

For the unmounted one I distinguish between backing away from pony and walking away, so he knows whether he can come with me or not. :)

As BB said though, don't worry about it too much, you'll get loads of help and tips when you're there, and won't be seen as a numpty if you haven't done any of it before.
