A friend has just rang concerned about two of his 5 dogs because they have been sick, are a little listless and not interested in their food.

Is being sick good because I least they are getting out of their system (whatever it is) or, would it be best to ring vet tonight?

Thanks :)

How are the dogs this morning? Usually if any of mine are sick, so long as they are drinking and no other obvious symptoms, I will remove food for 24hours and monitor. If still sick next day, pop to vet. Listlessness can come from the unpleasantness of being sick.

However, if in doubt, it's better to see a vet and not need it, than not see a vet and live to regret it.

being sick can be a very bad sign.

If a dog has something stuck in its intestine it will be sick and without urgent surgical removal it will die.

I agree that it is better to be safe than sorry. Take them to the vets as it could be serious.
Fingers crossed for them - hopefully they've just eaten something bad.

Generally with dogs one or two episodes of vomiting are not overly concerning providing the dog is drinking and keeping water down and doesn't have severe diarrahe (sp?)
If still being sick after 24 hours or obviously distressed (a little quiet is to be expected if they don't feel great) then they need looked at but our usual for a dog being sick is to withhold food for 24 hours and slowly re-introduce light diet over a few days. If they still can't tolerate food then off to the vets.

Andulucian, GG, Richie and Mynutmeg thanks for your advice and asking about them.

One of the dogs was drinking on Sunday but the older one was reluctant to drink. He took them both to the vet on Monday even though they were a little brighter. Vet wasn't too concerned because they'd had water so said to keep an eye on them for 24 hours, let them have a little food if they wanted and go back if no better.

They have improved and younger one is almost back to normal. Older one (14) enjoyed all the cuddles and freshly cooked chicken so much she's become Bette Davies of the dog world

Friend's animals mean the world to him so he's so relieved they've improved :)

Fabulous.

A few vomits in 24 hours is usually fine but it is always good to know that firstly, an owner not sure got proper help and secondly, that it was indeed nothing to worry about.

Thanks for the update :-)
