He only licked his food yeaterday and hasn't touched it today. I have him booked in at his vets ttomorrow- earliest appt. they had. They do not have an emergency vet and my horses vets only deal with horses.

I am really worried about giving him his insulin tonight because he hasn't eaten and I know he shouldn't have it on an empty stomach.

What is worse- not to give him his insulin because he won't eat or give it to him anyway?

Oh sorry! I cut and pasted this and missed off the most important bit!

He is a diabetic cat on 4 units twice a day so him not eating is dangerous

Absolutely do not give insulin if the cat has not eaten, he will go into a hypo. As what star says, if he has eaten half, give him half the dose.

How are his teeth? that can sometimes put a cat of eating. Also, in the winter, I warm my cat's food up before feeding her, I leave it in the kitchen instead of the garage. Cats like their food at room temperature.

I hope your kitty is ok. let us know how he gets on.

Fingers crossed for you and your feline friend.

I will do. Thanks for advice.

HPL, He has always had his food at room temperature. Fussy litle man refuses to eat if it has been in the fridge and always has done!

His teeth have been checked recently so don't think it's that. I've got a feeling his insulin levels are way off because he is doing exactly what he did before he was confirmed diabetic (off food, sloping off and not wanting to be with us, drinking like a fish etc)

I just worry about him even more being a diabetic! Plus, I have had him for 14 years.

He has an appointment at the vets this afternoon so I will let you know how it goes. Poor little puss

There a worry these diabetics, personally Get him to the vets asap. Or alternatively do what we did & buy an Alfatrack Meter for our 2 diabetic dogs.

When was the last time he was glucose checked?? Echo the others with there advise on not giving Insulin if not eaten or half dosing if he's eaten a bit.

But the best thing to do i call your vet & just pop him across quickly. They can go down hill really fast & it's not worth the trauma if you can catch it quickly, he may be suffering a small infection as well as diabetics do tend to suffer more infections than normal.

Good luck hope he's feeling back to norm quickly.

Whats an Alphatrack meter?

Its been a few weeks since he has had his levels checked so I really hope its that. The vet has never been particulary happy that they have been totally right. One week ha will be fine, the next too high or too low. His vets is 20miles away (closest to me that does small animals) so the vet put it down to the journey upsetting him and messing up his levels. Typical cat, not good traveller!

I will be leaving in a few minutes with him. Its the earliest they could see him. At least they know him inside out. I just hope I will be bringing him back again.

These animals we love so much just don't know what they put us through! I have already told him he can sleep on our bed from now on!

UPDATE

Just got back. She has said to half his dose until he is eating properly. She gave him an appetite stimulant and he wolfed back a bowl of food when we got back which I think is a good sign.

Unfortunately she found a lump in his side. She said it could be constipation (fingers crossed) but if not it is probably a tumor or his kidney.

She thinks he might have an infection so he is on a course of antibiotics and has to go back on friday.

Thanks for updating us.

Thats both good and not so good news. I have my fingers crossed that the lump is constipation and it will resolve with him eating again.

Its great that he is eating again and is on antibiotics.

What is his name?

I have a 16 year old blue tabby and she is my world.

Keep us posted on kitty's progress.

Fingers crossed. x

His names Muffin! I've had him since I was 12 (26 now) so hes been there through middle school, secondry school, sixth form, marriage and children!!

Don't know what I'd do without him.

He's already survided a nasty dog attack and was seriously ill when he got diabetes so he is a fighter.Hes just a big fat lazy lump but couldn't do without him. Should have called him Garfield!

What sort of health is your 16 year old in?

We should ask admin to set up a cat forum on here where we could all talk about our beloved moggies!

Fingers crossed for Muffin the cat who does not give in!

A cat chat forum would be a great idea.

My 16 year old - Willow, is in great condition (fingers crossed she remains like this forever!) She has arthritis in her shoulders, but it is controlled with Metacam and her magnetic 'necklace', she bounces around like a kitten - when she can be bothered.

Willow is a rescue cat, I have had her since she was 4 years old and I love her to bits.

PS I also have a ginger feral cat who has adopted me at the stables. He is so lovely, he would not let anybody get close to him, but now he sits on my lap and curries in for a cuddle. Love him to bits too.

Bless them! She is gorgeous! What fab colouring! Cats must be the laziest creatures on the planet.

I have just opened Muffs xmas present

(tin tuna) and he wolfed it back! He has now come to sit on the with us so I think the injections may have helped. Fingers crossed for the little man!

Yep my Willow is gorgeous and she knows it. She is lazing around on my bed when i am getting ready for work. What a life she has. I am coming back as a spoiled and well loved cat next time.
