When I am older I would like to be a vet. I have looked up things I can practise, I can take most animals pulses (cats, dogs, horses, sheep !), For christmas I was given a proper medical stethascope. I have listened to dogs and horses heartbeats but I have a problem with my cat/kittens, Everytime the stethascope touches her she starts purring, I can't hear her heartbeat over it :(. I really want to hear hers because the vets mentioned she had a strange heartbeat and it would be interesting to listen to.

Aw tinsel tree!
im afraid you will have to keep practising! :p#
Cats are total pains in the neck sometimes! Best thing to do is try it when shes doing other things-without getting scratched!
But If you have a good local vet(and yes there are a few!!) ask if you can visit one day and have him/her show you what they are listening for on your cat.Or offer to help out in clinic cleaning up etc.this is a good way to get experience and a definate idea if you still want to go into veterinary medicine.

well if you were local I could give you a list of very nice vets who are more than happy to show owners how to care for their animals and have always got work experience lot begging to come back!

Try other vets- seriously there are some good ones who will be happy to explain things to you!:)

even vets cant hear cats hearts when they are purring. you have to try and stop them purring. fortunately lots of them stop purring when they find themselves stuck on an exam table. there are some persistant ones though and we have some other tricks available to try and stop them, but nothing easy you could try at home. perhaps try placing her on a table or somewhere where she wont feel as comfy and maybe she wont purr.

Thanks Everyone :) I'm going to try the vinegar thing. She is just one of those cats that you look at and she purrs. She was being spayed whilst I was on work experience (coincedently ;)) and whilst they were sedating her she was purring, she was attempting to purr whilst the clipped her and put the tube down her throat under sedation and the first thing she did when she came round was purr at everyone who came through the cat ward
