Well I just got my first welsh a few weeks ago! He's a welsh c, 3 and a half years, called Flash. He's the first horse I've had who's got a passport with breeding in! So I'm excited to get him going over winter and start some showing next year.

I've not done much showing so was wondering what kind of classes and qualifiers there are for welshes? Also just interested to see what others do with theirs :)

He's a cheeky boy but has been great so far, well behaved on the ground (mostly haha!) and good to ride, though he does have a strange hatred of walking through mud, which he's gonna have to get used to out hacking haha. Anyway, pics!

And trying his hardest to make his way into the tack room to get breakfast via the cat flap!

Awwww very sweet! You can't bet a welshie...although I am biased!
Mine is Luna - homebred and a real diva. I always said she should be a L'Oreal girl because she thinks she's worth it lol

She unfortunately developed spavins at the age of 5 (she is 8 now) and so we had a couple of years where we had to really watch her work, but as she has got older, they have obviously fused and she is sound enough again now. She has done a bit of everything, farm rides, beach, hunter trials....mostly M&M showing, and this year I'd like to do working hunter. She loves to jump but as she is an opinionated little beggar she thinks she should dictate speed. I am trying to teach her that faster does not always equal better!!!

This is her from this weekend....

Ah lovely, I've always got a soft spot for welshys, although don't own any now I have in the past had a part bred and full welsh D. Yours is gorgeous, as is Dollymixs Luna

Dollymix lovely pics yours is beautiful! I'm hopin my boy will end up being able to do a bit of everything too!

Got to say I'm a fan of the welsh so far haha! He has a lot of character :)

Megibo my other horse is an Arab cross and he's awesome fun, so seems like a good cross to go for!

Girl racer thanks! If that's yours in your sig he looks very similar being chestnut with the flaxen mane and tail, beautiful colour isn't it :biggrin3:

You can't say that and not post a picture! :p

he is gorgeous, no idea what you can do with him but watching thread with interest as I have accidentally aquired a 13.2 welsh A x ( not sure what as only dam is on his passport but he is reg with WCAPS ) mine is coloured so could do coloured classes although never quite sure what judge is looking for in them ! having said that he normally moves amazingly with a great trot but the one show I took him to he shuffled round and barely moved so maybe showing is not to be his forte !!
also the pony i rode as a child was an arab x welsh b - beautiful dapple grey with a flowing cream mane and tail and a little b****r but great fun, I learnt to fall off !!

Haha yeah it's getting that trot in the show ring that's the hard bit! Think I'm gonna need to practice sprinting to keep up!!

Haha the best ponies are the ones that teach you to fall off :biggrin3:

He's lovely!

I was owned by a Section D from the time we were both thirteen until he died very unxpectedly at 27. He was still going strong before the evil colic got him - the first time he'd ever been ill. Well, he had strangles at 16 but we only realised when he got an abcess that burst, he must have been rough but he never showed it.

We did a bit of everything. Hacking, eventing, riding club, fun rides, drag hunting. The only thing we didn't do was pure dressage. There just wasn't any point unless he could make up the difference with a double clear inside the time afterwards. :D

He was opinionated, arrogant, bolshy, stubborn, stupidly, always knew best, excitable bordering on screw loose, unbelievably talented, game for anything, reliable and utterly adorable. I had total faith in him getting me to the other side of a fence. He stopped at the first part of a double at the age of 25 and even though there were no other signs I took him straight to the vet who diagnosed arthirits in his knees. He couldn't believe he was still moving, let alone sound from the x-rays. He stopped jumping there and then but we hacked for another 2 years.

His mother was identical to him but her full sister was an RDA pony.:p They do take a bit more time to mature (both physically and emotionally) than most horses though. Ebony didn't stop growing until 7 and didn't grow up until at least 17!

This is him on the Badminton ride at 25, a few weeks before he stopped jumping. I'm hoping this will be photo and not a link but whenever I try recently all I get is links? Any tips on that gratefully received!

It won't let me edit but wanted to add: Showing wise you could obviously do Section C classes & mountain & moorland but if he jumps well (I've not found one yet that can't - some that wo'nt but not one that can't!) you could do Working Hunter Pony or Welsh performance classes (normally only available at WPCS shows) At a local show, Riding club or family pony would be good too as he's small enough for a child and strong enough for an adult.

Wow he looks amazing at 25! Brilliant story, sounds like the horse of a lifetime.

Well I've tried Flash over some small jumps on the lunge and he popped them happily but he needs to learn to canter properly before any jumping under saddle yet, bless him!

Thanks for the showing info I'll have to have a look what classes our local show has on!

Got to love a welshie! I have a section d who is.... stubborn, opinionated, bolshy, super talented and so handsome! Quirky is definitely the word to describe a welsh! Well worth it though.

Muckypony - haha seem to be the most common characteristics of the welshies!

Well I took Flash on another hack today, and ended up bronced off! Not his fault, tried for a canter, got a few strides then he went WHAT ARE MY LEGS DOING! I almost stayed on! He just stood there after and we continued on the hack though good as gold so I'm still super happy with him, we had bikers flying past, been out with different horses, didn't bat an eyelid, and was happy to lead the hack or go behind the others so I can't fault him really. Gonna sitck to trot for now until he's a bit stronger before cantering again :biggrin3:

EmmaB my old mare is a TB X Arab X Sect D too. Must say looks nothing like yours she has a very TB head and legs and Sect D body. She is very beautiful though like yours.

I share a Sect D does that count? Totally adore her and she will do absolutely anything for me and makes me feel so safe. She had a reputation for being a real handful when I took her on but she has been a dream from day one. Love her so much! :)

I love looking at these photos! We have had a few Section A's come and go,and have Knobberpony who is an unregistered Section B,23 years old and has been there and done it.She is cantankerous, grumpy, scruffy and stubborn, but does anything you ask, hacks, herds up sheep, takes my children hunting,x country,PC,gymkhana games. My eldest won 4 cups on her last year and we all love her to bits. She had a bad reputation in the past, but has been the perfect pony for us and has a home for life.I can't do photos I'm afraid.

Aww he's scummy! Bless him he looks quite immature, wait 'til he bulks out a bit hehe! Love my D and can't wait to get another. Totally bonkers but a heart of gold :-)

Oh yes definitely a baby haha!! Turn my back for one second and every brush from the grooming bag is strewn across the yard! Also had various buckets/brushes thrown at me as he has to have absolutely everything in his mouth!

They must come out all different then I guess with the variety in the breeds haha! All fab though by the sound of it :biggrin3:

Love your baby EmmaB, can relate to the need for everything to be explored.....by mouth!

Anyway here's my pic overload.....

Roberto, my 4 yo Sec D. Shown in-hand and backed this year. Hard to find the words to say how much he means to me.
