Any working hunter people who can help newbie

I've got a lovely 4 year old I'm hoping to have a go at some working hunter with- I've never done any form of showing/wh so not sure where to start or what type of shows to start with? Also what primarily are the judges looking for - type etc?

Any help greatly appreciated
 
At top level they want a really well put together hunter type that would do well in flat classes, it needs to jump cleanly, give a great ride and be mannerly, a middleweight mainly tb would be the ideal stamp but in reality they come in all shapes and sizes and can still win on the day.

Your horse is still young so I would start in novice ridden classes , develop the jumping in other ways, at home, some sj/ hunter trials etc, and only do the WH classes once he is well established to give you both a good chance of getting it all right on the day.

At local level pretty much anything will be in WH classes so any more info really depends on what you aim to do and what your horse is like as a type, lovely he may be but that doesn't always mean he is a potential show horse.

Thank you I'll try and attach a pic of him. I'm in no rush and happily just popping little fences, letting him see the world and mooching around at the moment doing very light work. I've just been told by a few people that hed be a good stamp for workers :) so thought wed give it a go at some point- hes put together really nicely put together.

I don't know where you are in the country OP, but here in NI quite a few show centres run 4yo WH classes, and height WH classes. Ie 60cm, 70cm, 80cm etc....

Often they have the courses open for schooling the next day too.
