Anybody bath just for the sake of it?

and im not knocking you at all moomin :)

i just think all these people saying horses not bathed for years, are clean, are stretching the truth a bit.........

I agree on that one! I would never turn up at a show without having bathed my mare. The thought of it gives me nightmares... ;-)

My black boy doesn't get bathed and when I showed him he got groomed within an inch of his life, but not bathed. He isn't dusty or greasy or scurfy as he is well groomed (though less so in winter when he needs his oil). He has had 2 1st, 3 2nds a 3rd and 2 5ths (which is the lowest he has ever come) and the judges have always commented on how good a condition his coat is in. I've tried to post a pic but it seems my Photobucket account has reached its bandwidth limit :( he is the horse in my av that is gleaming ;)

If horses are groomed properly in the old fashioned way, spending 40+ mins a time and finishing with a strapping - I can well believe that washing the entire horse is probably not necessary. Those that don't need to wash white bits, well you're just showing off :D

so you dont wash his white socks or mane and tail even?

When I used to show him I used to paint the socks with sheep face white and then brush it off. Mane and tail - just a good brush, though I do use mane and tail as they are super thick. No one who sees him ever believes that I don't bath him.

Eta - now I have Oreo I may need to start bathing as he is grey with pink skin so could get disgusting!

Even the donkey gets baths with us...

He gets really itchy if he doesn't get a wash occasionally. All our horses get bathed fairly regularly, if they get sweaty they have a wash and Al tends to give them a scrub at the same time- saves so much time later. Especially with Smokes who is slowly turning white...

my landlord would have a fit at the water bill if i washed 2 horses and 2 ponies every week just for the fun of it! we don't show or compete and they live out as much as possible so are welcome to keep all their natural oils. i hose legs in winter and sponge of sweat patches in summer and will sometimes do mane and tail for the hell of it but generally i like them to smell like horses rather than the perfume counter at Boots!
