Anybody ever owned a Danish Fjord?
Just wondered what you experiences of the breed are?

We are possibly thinking of buying one for my mum to have some fun on, just hacking and a bit of small jumping.

Thanks,
Jo.

Why don't you get her another superstar Bodey

? Though I suppose horses and cool as him are pretty rare! Sorry no info on the breed though, but wouldn't she be better with a more regular cob type? As I tend to think of Fjords as kids ponies, I may be completely wrong though.

Well it’s actually the place where I brought Bodey from that are selling them (they have 2). We also brought GinaGem’s Ru from there and Blackie (remember our hairy cob).
It’s a dealer that we really trust.

We had thought about another cob but most are unbroken from there and these fjords are backed and hacking.

Just realised how badly my first post was written, bad Jo. Saying that I have just had a filling and I’m not really feeling myself.

Do you mean Norwegian Fjordhorses? Have known a few in my day (I am from Sweden, they are pretty common there) - they are nice, safe (but can be a bit stubborn and strong) horses who will never be superstars at anything ridden, but are very reliable and can do a bit of everything - check out this link for some pics from the Swedish Fjordhorse Championships.

There have been a few famous Fjord x'es too - In the 90's there was an event pony who wan the European Championships who was half-Fjord.

Definitely worse than the majority of the big round cobs I have ridden. I found it very on the forehand, with a short, jarring action - but perhaps I just found a bad one!

Maybe, maybe not. Well me and GinaGem are going to try it out first on Wednesday so we will see. I’ve ridden a few cobs in my time so I can compare.

I suppose with any breed, you can get good ones and bad ones?!? Lets hope this is a good one!

I used to share a Fjord (see 1st pic in my sig). He was lovely to ride, quite forward going, def not a plod! He definitley had a mind of his own and needed firm handling on the ground but having said that had a wonderful temprement & would never have dreamt of biting or kicking anyone. We did a bit of everythingwith him, was quite good at dressage, would happily go showjumping & was quite handy at cross country too. He was also as bombproof as you could get on roads. As someone posted earlier, the chances of them being superstars at any particular discipline is probably quite small but for a fun all rounder that the whole family could ride if you wanted they're great.

I used to work at a RS that had one. Lovely, very safe with beginners and lovely ground manners. Unfortunately had picked up naughty RS habits like cutting across the school to be with his friends or refusing to canter.

Didn't read all the replies so don't know if the danish/nowegian debate got resolved BUT we have a couple of norwegian fjords on the riding school, I've found them to be really nice especially compared to the Hafflingers! They seem to have nice smooth paces and are willing and strong weight carriers and pleasant to handle. I wouldn't say they would win Mr athletic of the year but they try hard and are good natured about it. We had one bigger one who could be a bit of a tank at times but probably just because he was allowed to get away with charging to the rear of the ride too often but the other two I've handled are lovely. We have a nice youngster in atm who, having been backed, turned away then bought up to the yard was left in him box for 5 days without being ridden. I got on him with some serious reservations I can tell you but he was such an angel, didn't buck, didn't spook just trotted on round like he'd been doing it all his life. Nice ponies.

Just my experience!

The fjord breed is very much norwegian. There are no danish fjord ponies. The pony may have been bred here perhaps? But the breed is very much belonging to norway.

The knabstruppers are more ours

As for the norwegian fjord; nice ponies - we have a couple on our yard used as RS ponies. They can be a little bit stubborn but theyre quite cute. Very stocky little things

a boy at my yard has one.
it is safe but so so stubborn.

they cannot get it to load for love nor money.
have even had r maxwell out etc

No, ours wouldnt load into a lorry for ages, didnt mind a trailor though. In the end we only fed him on the box and he soon got the message if he didnt walk on he wouldnt get fed. LOl. His stomach over-rode his brain within a few days.

I think they're very much the type of horse that if you give them an inch they'll take a mile. You certainly have to make sure you have their respect & they know who's the leader from day 1, but as i said before, do have lovely personalities & are very safe.

LOL! They are Norwegian Fjords.

They are generally fairly laid back ponies but can be a little bolshy and strong willed. A friend of mine had one and it was a funny little thing to ride. Not my thing I'm afraid.
