Just been told about this site where horses can be bought for meat price and delivered to you in the UK. I have spoken to two people that have done this and have said that it is highly rewarding. Has anyone else got any experience of this? It mainly seems to be mares in foal or with foals at foot. Bless them some ar in a pityfull state.

I know several people who have, and I also expect a long debate here

* goes off to make popcorn*

We have a meat horse from belguim. Hes a bit of a nutter but I love him and has proved to be a lovely single drive, although gets wound up in the pair. The latest theory is he was transported in one of those awful wagons. Defiantly a project horse and as he's brabant/boulanaise he does require propper handeling and i could see him being downright dangerous in the wrong hands

Only an idiot would do such a thing.
And before you ask, no, I haven't.

Other countries do eat horses. There are so many unwanted horses slautered needlesly in this country, mares, mares in foal, foals, geldings - the lot that i think these should be dealt with first without bringing more into the country. Many healthy horses and ponies are slaughtered daily due to overbreeding.
Charities are at bursting point constantly - not all have a no kill policy! I was shocked at first but do understand in a way. I was advised to do the same. I could not do it but it means we cannot take in anymore. I just think this country could do with sorting before bringing in more. By that i don't mean intervention in some ways is not needed, it is. The banning of transporting them live for starters.

Have to agree with Shills and JM07, if you want to save a horse from going for slaughter (if you must) go to any horse sale in the country, take your pick.

If you think about it, by buying a horse from a meat market in France, you are rewarding the producer of that horse financially. And he probably kept it in less than ideal conditions.
You'd be better off financially rewarding a stud for correct care and production of youngstock, than creating a market for low-end horses. For the same reason, you should never buy anything underweight or in poor condition at a sale here - report the seller instead, and complain to the auctionhouse.

It is so easy to let your heart run your head....... probably best to not look at them when you got to the local sales.

RSPCA where at Melton this week ( I went for carrots, not a horse!) They removed a Chestnut hunter from a stall as it was underweight apparently and were also concerned about a bay that had bite marks all over it, the bloke handling it said it had been attacked on the journey there!

I would like to point out i agree with everyone here, the reason we have a meat his is someone else imported him and we found him at the annual heavy horse sales in chittlehamholt. He has pretty poor hind leg confoermation so i have no idea why he was brought!

I was going but got way laid. Were there many horses? My daughter rides for a 'nice lady dealer' there. Gives her pocket money

She is also strict on safety. All her horses are genuine.

they pay more than meat money for them as the french farmer have cotton out to it, that all these people want to save them from meat and will pay stupid money. also the cost of bring them to uk is about £1000. i've not read of one that is ridden. so you end up paying nearly 2k for a field ornament, bleedy expensive pet. then you the ones that are dangerous like the 18 year old stallion that was about 15.2hh that attacks people that are bet of being killed or the stallions that are being bought over and used for breeding, breeding more crap if it was in a meat farm it was there for a reason not because it was some brilliant breeding stallion. sorry for my rant

most of the mares are either in foal or with foal at foot as it's meant to make the meat taste better

There were just over 80 horses/ponies there, we watched about 10 go through just to see what they were fetching as we haven't been for over a year. The hunters were going for about £1200 and ponies £600, Coloureds were going for £2.5k!
Therewas one that caught my eye, a big grey but again I had to leave before my heart ruled my head!

Hmmmmmm there is a French meat horse which was brought from Safecobs at our yard - Won't be my choice, but each to their own.....................Perhaps some of these Meat horses that end up with dealers just prove too much for the people that bring them over (given that most are unbacked and brought with unknown temperaments etc...). I can't believe most dealers dodgy or otherwise, would bother transporting them over here (especially as they don't seem that cheap anyway).

I agree wholeheartedly.

But why then do people feel differently about dogs and cats? I would like people to support responsible dog and cat breeders for example, rather than picking up rescues. Rescue centres exist on the charity of people willing to 'fund' such a market. If no-one paid, then these animals would not be around - good or bad thing?
