Hi guys

Im currently advertisng an apprenticeship for my yard. In the past we've had some fantastic people apply for the position and both them and the yard have benefited hugely. However, recently the applicants have been a little less than suitable. Im not sure what has happened to the caliber of horse people that were around when I was 16-23, but I feel that work ethics and attitude have slipped somewhat.

My yard is based in North Lincolnshire and we offer BHS training alongside the apprenticeship as well as extra lessons with experts and the opportunity to compete regularly.

Anybody interested?:cool:
 
Got any info on the wage/benefits, type of yard, length of position, if own horse can go too?? I know a girl looking, please PM :)

Its under job vacancies. We offer additional training for BHS exams, staff discounts on livery, opportunity to compete and a great team spirit.

The wage is in line with NMW for apprentices and our apprentices come away with qualifications and a great experience.

To be honest don't think I'd have much of a work ethic for those wages if that website is correct- and I am what you would call a grafter.

Not saying your place is the same but knew a girl who did this apprentice thing locally and worked 10-12 hrs a day hard graft, got less 100 week. She just couldn't survive on those wages and that was with help from parents
Bus fares alone up here would cost £4+ a day or you would struggle to run a car and eat.Sorry just my feelings on it.
 
Just what my daughter would be looking for & you're not too far from us either - unfortunately its a year too early as she wants to finish her A levels x
 
I agree with tequilamist, i loved it when i did but unfortunatly just couldnt complete coarse as the hours and graft you put in for measly wages just wernt worth it plus left me with very little time and energy for my own horses (which thankfully parents paid for at the time) i cant imagine many over 18 could manage :( it is still a great oppertunity for the right person though so good luck!
 
Tequilamist - I agree entirely with the points you raised. The apprenticeship wage isnt a great motivator, and i know many struggle at that rate. what we try to acheive is a balance of work, training and staff perks to make up for this. The apprenticeship schemme allows for a qualification to be acheived at the same time as earning a wage, all be it quite small. Others studying at college full time wouldnt be able to acheive this balance.

Some it suits and others it doesnt.

Rowan666 - Im sorry that your employer took advantage you. Our average day here is 7.5 hours with few possibly doing an 8 hour day. They never work more than 40 hours per week with a guaranteed minimum of 30 hours in accordance with apprenticeship requirements.

CEC is always looking at ways to boost morale and reward commitment and dedication. If you guys have any ideas Id be very appreciative.
 
An apprenticeship is what it is. With the amount of school leavers that can't get a job surely it has to be a reasonable bet.
 
Not looking for an apprenticeship, just saying that the wages are what they are and the experience that is gained has to count for something. My stepdaughter has accepted an apprenticeship with British Dressage and we know we will have to help support her and her horse for a few more years yet. She is just completing her second year at Hartpury College. At least she isnt sitting on her backside doing nothing. She knows it will be hard graft.
